Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - an entirely incoherent review

So I went down to Woozles, our awesome local children's bookstore, today. My mission was to pick up a lending copy of Sarah Rees Brennan's 'Unspoken' because I and my bookshelf are sad when it is gone and I cannot actually buy it for everyone I will ever meet. And the great thing about buying awesome books at awesome local bookstores (aside from ( Read more... )

I have read this one! It took me longer to get into it than it clearly took you, but I was deeply fond of it overall. *^^*

[This is my sad face because you didn't crosspost and I am forced--FORCED--to leave a comment on LJ instead.

(If the lack of crosspost is because you didn't feel up to figuring out the logistics, I will show you next time we see each other, because it's quite easy but may take a bit of poking around? I seem to remember it taking me a bit of effort, anyway. But if it's because you just didn't want to, that's fine too. ^^)]

[That said, YAY FOR POSTING!!! Which is the actual important part, obviously. *hugs!*]

Lack of crosspost is because LJ went down just after I posted this, and then yes I need to figure out logistics. I'll get there!

I got into it rather quickly, yes. Because DANTE!!!! (Um, I love you too, Ari. Dante just breaks me, is all.)

Ugh, I hate it when sites I use so much flake out! Although for what it's worth, to crosspost you start on DW anyway (and then if LJ isn't up, you just get a "crosspost attempt failed" notification, which can happen for a wide variety of reasons but is rare enough that I'm always surprised).

You are making me quite jealous. While I read like a fiend I don't remember the last *new* book I read that made me wish the rest of the world away that much so I could just finish reading it. Old favourites, yes, but nothing new for a while now.

I get that. It had been nothing new for 10 years for me, and then it was all SRB and everything else felt flat. Which, I mean, she's awesome, and I tend to fall for things deep and hard and reread a lot, so that was great, but I was a little scared that everything else would be flat for another 10 years, and Sarah doesn't have another book coming out until 2016!

And while this is certainly not unseating TotS or The Lynburn Legacy for the top spots in my heart, it's just very exciting for something else to give me anything like this feeling.

Is it about the historical Aristotle and Dante? Because I keep thinking it is. You really loved it, though, it's nice to see.

Ah, no :) Dante's dad is a professor (of English), I think? And Ari's grandfather was Aristotile, but they anglicized it for the grandson. They're both Mexican-American, and it's set in the 80's. The names are a coincidence that get them talking: other significance, if any, is a bit subtler to tease out.

I really did love it. It was a beautiful story!
