unfortunately it ends up being kind of a catch-22. the major parties tend to exclude on the basis of who will get the most funding and who is able to provide their own. and this country has a natural prejudice against third-party candidates because so many of us think bilaterally (and let's face it; isn't there something reassuring about that simple sweet or salty, left or right choice?) i would love to see a time when campaign finance is totally funded by the government and thus totally equal, because that would bring about just such a chance for grassroots candidates to be heard, but i'm afraid such an idea is just too socialistic for most minds.

Interesting idea. But I think it's easier for a rich person to hide their indiscretions, since they can pay people off. Poor and mid-income people do stupid things too, but it would be easier for asshole reporters/political helpers to dig up some dirt. A middle class person could run for office and it would sound great until someone exposed their former gay lover, the time they cheated on their wife, their bad grades in college, their family's history of whatever, etc ( ... )
