i made the same transition from village to city when i was 18 and yep.... it's not easy to find a datum point to build from for the reasons you've talked about.....

having said that... fish are wonderful creatures..... you get a small one and put it in a small bowl... feed it... it adjusts it size to the bowl.... you decide it needs more space and give it a tank.... after a few months, it has adjusted it's size to it's environment. most career paths follow that kind of logic.... stick with it, learn from it, grow..... then you have the choice of growing further or being a bigger fish returning to the same pond you started from ;)

btw.... not all 'experts' are experts in IT... some simply talk the talk ;)
