NWoD v. OWoD discussion

Nov 10, 2009 12:02

I've been reading the Cam lists, and seeing the hand wringing over why the new system seems to be so lumpy, despite being superior in test resolution and diversity of tools to be incorporated, and why plots fail to develop over the long term, possibly due to concerted player action ( Read more... )

I loved Masquerade's setting, I still prefer it to Requiem, hands down. Thing is, though, I feel like I closed the book on those stories. We got all the Big Answers, and that story is done. I think I'd only go back to playing it if the whole cam or a very huge part of it went back to it.

...that the vast majority of members who have been around more than 3 years will want to play Masquerade.

Those with less than 3 years will never have known a system other than Requiem, because gaming is a habit picked up when relatively young, and Masquerade is really a dim memory for most of those folks.

The real question to me is which group will win out-- the more numerous 'young' players, or the more vocal (and influential by reputation) veterans who prefer Masquerade.

I don't know. I joined in 2002, so I had a good few years of Masquerade. You might be right, but I've talked to a few people who feel as I do, who have been around for a long time, so I know I'm not entirely alone.

I'm with ya. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I played the old game for 6 years, never had a pc die. I was happy when NWoD came along... its 1000 times better IMO.

I prefered Masquerade, obviously. But then I preferred RPing, and not number crunching. I hate Number crunching SO much, that Evangeline, the most ridiculous ghoul on the face of the planet, was a 0ccp character with XP on her when I remembered to bother to add it on. She had no vampire abilities at all. And yet...I bluffed like a maniac with her, and folks left her alone. The whole "walk like they clang" bit LOL. That was the fun of the oWoD...if you could make them believe you...they might JUST leave you alone. My other long running ludicrous character was the 0cpp 11th gen Diabliarist Red Neck...even stood face to face with an archon and admited being a rabid diablarist and walked away from it...clang clang clang.

You just wait 'til someday there's a "New NWOD". :)

Although I personally prefer NPCs to be assailable rather than plot-protected*, I also feel that it's of benefit for NPCs to matter a lot. In a world where NPCs are the key source of power, LARPing / negotiation matters more than stats. So while I personally feel that it's good there's a new setting, I do sometimes miss the sheer oppressiveness of OWoD.

*I realise that's not what you're referring to. Uncertainty about powers is good.
