Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Chihiro is a thin woman, hardly five feet and three inches in height. Although she is quite slender, she is soft in all the right places and does, in fact, have a bust and a butt.
2. How old is she? She's nineteen-years-old. It's been a shocking ten years since her adventure through the bathhouse, and she's nearly twenty.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch? Chihiro doesn't slouch when speaking to someone or when she's walking around. However, if you catch her sitting down, she does tend to slouch, especially when in thought. Her shoulders hunch up and she leans over, almost looking around for someone, while trying to stay hidden.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? She is actually quite fit and very healthy. She is an errand girl, so she does quite a lot of heavy lifting and other sort of things that keep her in shape.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? If she's lost in her thoughts, she will be quite clumsy, however, as years have gone on, she's gathered a sense of grace around her. Perhaps it's the kimono she wears during work hours that make it so she really must be at the top of her game when it comes to working.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror? Chihiro is quite pretty. She's not someone you would look at and turn away in disgust, however, unless she's done up, she's not someone you'd double take for. When she looks in the mirror, she can't help but feel like something's missing. She's tried diets, more exercise, makeovers, but nothing seems to fix whatever it is that's missing. If you watch her closely, you'll notice she has a sparkle that she won't see when she looks in the mirror, because the only time you'll see it is when she's thinking.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Her complexion is quite clear, regardless of the fact that she does nothing. And remarkably, from her childhood antics, she's retained no scars. Her skin doesn't keep scars well, as they fade quite quickly. As an errand runner, she tans naturally during the summer, and during the winter it whitens out. She's quite normal in that aspect.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style. Her hair is a deep brown. It's got almost auburn shades to it in the sun, and when she turns her head the right way, you can almost see sparkles of blonde. Her hair is quite thick, it's coarse, but all Japanese hair is that way. As for the style, she can't help but, out of habit, throw her hair into a ponytail every so often. However, since childhood, she has evolved from that style and instead leaves it down more often than not. If you do happen to catch her on 'one of those days', she will be wearing her hair up. Always, no matter if her hair is up or down, her bangs frame here eyes and dip around her cheekbones.
9. What color are her eyes? Her eyes are a dark brown, almost black. Her iris and pupil almost seem to bleed together.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? She is a Japanese woman who constantly slips into her own thoughts. That pretty much sums her up.
11. What are her chief tension centers? Definitely her shoulders and her eyebrows. She always finds herself raising her shoulders when she's thinking and furrowing her brows. She doesn't remember what it is she should be remembering. Sometimes, but not always, her lips pout up if she can't get anything to come to mind.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit? She tends to stay comfortable, running around does take it's toll on clothing and if it's something comfy that can be replaced versus hundred dollar suits, she'll take it. However, once the bathhouse opens, she is in a kimono smiling with perfect posture. If at all possible, she does love to be in her swimsuits. Rivers make her happy, even if she doesn't remember why.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them? Her clothes do fit well. They hug her curves [where she has them] and flatter every part of her body. She feels comfortable in everything, except her kimono. Sometimes during her job, she'll be playing with the tie in the back and frowning. It's not something she likes to wear.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences? If at all possible, yes. Before the bathhouse opens, she wears precisely the same things. She's in her comfortable shirts and jeans or a pair of yoga pants. She hates to have 'work clothes' and 'home clothes', except those kimonos of hers. She doesn't even wear them to festivals.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? She wears panties, thank you. Never has she thought of not wearing underwear.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Her voice is melodic and fluid. Her voice is a bit higher pitched than others and it constantly sounds like she has her 'professional' voice on, but that's just how she sounds.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate? She talks rather evenly. If she doesn't want to talk to you, she'll rush her words a little, but she wants to say everything there is to say before cutting it short. Hardly if ever does she hesitate when speaking. If she does, it is because she's talking to her parents and they've cut her short.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? Since she was born Japanese, whenever she talks in English, she has a very heavy accent and some of her pronunciations are off. A lot of words she pronounces her Ts quite clearly, like in frightened. When she speaks in Japanese, she uses the Hokkaido dialect.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency? She speaks English and Japanese, both quite easily. Although her English is a little broken, because unless you started speaking it, it's really hard to understand sometimes.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations? If she's frusterated while speaking to someone in English, she will prattle on in Japanese, if only for a few moments. Likewise if she's distracted.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words? She thinks about her words as she goes, however, sometimes she will pause after a thought to connect it to the next.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? She is quite eloquent with her words and uses them properly in all situations. Only when she's under great stress and speaking in English will her sentences be broken down into gibberish.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart? She is a bit of both. She is quite smart though, having been through most of her college with remarkable marks, and having grown up in a smaller town after turning ten, she's learned quite a bit about how to stay out of trouble and how to keep her head about her in situations.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate? The answer is no. She cannot deliberate. She is not permitted to deliberate. If you allow her to think about something for too long, her mind will wander. She'll forget the question, the previous sentence, even the entire conversation. She has to think on her feet in order to understand completely what she's trying to say.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Although she is intelligent, she doesn't always think the most logical path. She prefers to feel than to think, which sometimes gets her into trouble. She isn't exactly the most practical person in the world either. She definitely picks her dreams over her reality any day. In her mind, she would rather be wherever her dreams show her than to be at work or at home.
4. What kind of education has the character had? She is currently enrolled at a college in Japan where she goes parttime. She's in her last year, meaning soon she'll graduate and be done with schooling and off to be an adult.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about? She is a cleaner, an errand runner, and a worker bee. She loves working with the bathhouse more than anything. She adores going to work and the smell of the pine incense and the warm smell of water. If anything, she is interested in business so she can eventually open or take over a bathhouse herself.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? Through and through, Chihiro is an introvert. She chooses to keep her emotions to herself and every little thought, unless somehow someone wheedles it out of her or the thought or emotion is far too strong. She constantly finds herself not noticing others because she is too busy focusing on her ideas and dreams and thoughts and any little whim that goes through her mind.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Chihiro... well, Chihiro is quite even-tempered. She does have her little mood swings as women tend to, however, she doesn't really have issues. She doesn't yell every so often for no reason. They're little things that she goes through and then they're over. She would love to be a cheerful person, but she's got too many things on her mind to be like that. She is melancholy, and there isn't anything she can really do about it except to dig herself deeper into her thoughts. In all honest, laid-back or driven, she is both. She is driven to make it to the end of the day so she can go home and curl up and think. She is driven to make it through the weekend to the beginning of the week so she can dream through work. It's an interesting cycle.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? She doesn't really care about new situations, and she is happy to meet new people, but she won't tell you her dreams. She hasn't even disclosed that type of information to her parents, let alone her friends from middle school. She'll allude to her thoughts, but never actually say it word for word.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react? In all actuality, both. She will act on her whims, especially if she's thought about it quite a bit, however, sometimes, she will react to things. But, more often than not, she will act.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight? Fight. Although she wasn't constantly on the streets, she much prefers to fight than to back away from something like that. She has the photos of every bruise from every fight she's ever been in.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Chihiro doesn't really have a sense of humour. She tries to understand things, but she generally cannot keep up with those things, thinking on the joke until the humour is lost.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them? She doesn't. Other than her flighty mind, she has no mental diability or disorder.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person? Honestly, the three days she spent at Abura-ya. Those three days were the most defining things her life. Since then, she dreams about it, but when she wakes up she can't remember names except for Abura-ya-- which she has looked up and it doesn't exist. The days she spent at that bathhouse changed her for the better, although, at the same time, they changed her for the worse.
14. What does she fear? Her biggest fear has to be fear of losing everyone she knows. She can feel that something is missing in her life, and that scares her. It means that she's lost someone dear to her that she can't replace. That also scares her. Losing someone and then forgetting them. It seems cruel.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations? She hopes to remember, to know what happened and to even put a name to that face she can see behind her eyes when she closes her eyes to sleep at night. Her big dream in live, however, is to own an upstanding bathhouse.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her? She doesn't want anyone to know that she's forgotten someone important to her. She's afraid if people know that that they'll think she'll forget them eventually as well. She's quite meticulous to not forget people, but it's still difficult to remember every single name and every single face.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents. During her early years, Chihiro was very close to her parents. She depended on them for everything, but she was a spoiled child then. After an incident occurred, which left her family and herself 'missing' for three days, Chihiro depended on them less and less, still finding them loving parents. After high school, her parents demanded she go to college. Chihiro was insistant against it, however, they are her parents and she ended up doing what they say. She said she just wanted to work in a bath house, and that went over far worse than if she were to have said she was gay. Her father threw a fit, her mother called her out, and everything just went to hell in a hand basket after that. Now, she sees her parents hardly often at all, enough to hug her mother and her father at least once a month. She wishes it were less often, as the arguments are getting louder and louder and longer and longer, but she can't really help it. She still loves them even through all that.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? Chihiro has no other family members. It's her, her mother and her father.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand? If she had been given the chance to meet much more of her family than her grandparents before they died when she turned four, she would know the answer to this. Unfortunately, both of her parents are only children as well.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them? If she could remember those three days, she would say it was Bou, the little crow, Zeniiba, Rin, Kaonashi, and Kamaji.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? Chihiro's best friends have to be Kaonashi, her spirit friend, Kitt, a talking car, and Katrina. Chihiro was greeted by Kaonashi ten years after having left Abura-ya. She'd met Kitt nearly a few weeks after that, speaking to him on friendly terms that developed into an intent debate. Her other friend, Katrina, was met a few times before being dubbed her best friend. They are all quite close to her, and she wouldn't give them up for anything.
6. Does she have other close friends? Yes, she has many close friends. It'd be difficult to name them all off, and sometimes she thinks of some as her friends while they don't think she's their friends.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people? She makes friends quite easily, actually. She's always willing to have a conversation and debating is something she's interested in quite a bit.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? If she had any, she would say definitely friends. She isn't exactly on the best terms with her family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once? She is single by terms of her main verse, but she is in love.
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? She has no spouse, but doesn't have a romantic anything with anyone.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest? Her first crush has to be that boy she keeps seeing in her dreams, with straight black hair and a very nice face. And, her latest crush, is the same boy. She can't get him out of her mind, even though she's twenty now.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner? She looks for someone to protect her when she needs it and to catch her when she falls. She wants someone to pick her up, brush her off and then let her go on her own again until she needs the help once more. It's not because she wants an open relationship, what she wants is someone to be her life partner. To hold onto her and never let go without smothering her.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any? She does not have any children, but she wants some eventually. Which means she wants to have kids, but not now. Not at all right now.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies? She would have to say no, but that is because she doesn't let anyone close enough to be an enemy.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the
Kinsey scale? Chihiro isn't really interested in anyone, but if one were to put her on the scale, she would fall somewhere between a two and a three, just because she really doesn't care. However, if she were to put herself on that scale, she would mark a rather large X.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her? She has never had it, so she's not sure how to feel about it. She isn't really interested in being with anyone sexually. It's absolutely unimportant in any part of her daily life. So much as mentioning it is enough for one day, quite possibly even an entire week.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? As was stated before, she isn't interested in sex in the least, which means she doesn't even know what her own turn-ons, turn-offs and bedroom habits are. She doesn't even know.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does she fit type? She fits being a Libra almost to a T. She is indecisive, somewhat careless, indulgent, emotional, externally cheerful, sociable and patient. As for being a Goat, she has perfected that sign quite well over her years.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life? She is quite spiritual. She can see spirits, in fact. The spirits of every living thing. This is her only key to how she can find out what's missing. She would ask the spirits questions herself, but most of them don't like humans much.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? She does have a personal code, however, she can't quite put it into words, just that it's there. She does what she can for those who can't and she does whatever is needed for herself to get by.
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? She is the way she is towards everything, indifferent.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them? She isn't prejudice towards anyone or anything. In fact, she's quite apathetic towards most things. They don't interest her and they don't bother her.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? She is actually comfortable in her situation. With the way her schooling is working out and the fact that her parents pay for her room and board as well as the schooling itself, and she has a job on the side, she's comfortable for where she is.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her? Her social class has not changed an ounce since she's moved from her parents' house.
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others? She lives in a little apartment. It's a nice little place that she spends most of her time if she's not swimming in the river. She lives alone, but would actually love a roommate. Every part of this apartment is immaculate. She cleans while she thinks, which leaves her without a speck of dust or a thing out of place.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on? She likes to go to the bathhouse when she isn't working, and although she is an employee there, she still has to pay. Other than that, half of her money goes into a savings account and the other half is put in cash inside her mattress for those 'just in case' purposes.
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else? Chihiro is an errand girl for a bathhouse. She runs around and buys supplies, cleans the tubs, floors and walls, fills the tubs, calls on requests, greets people at the front door, and all because she loves doing it. She does enjoy the feeling that comes with knowing she's done a good job.
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time? The only true hobby that she has is swimming. She will go swimming in rivers, not because it's dangerous and she may not make it back to the side she was on, but because she loves the feeling of rushing waters around her. It reminds her of something beautiful and creative. It reminds her of that face that doesn't ever leave her mind. Other than that, she cleans her house out of habit while she thinks and lets her mind wander.
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? She cooks her own meals. Because she lives alone, it's a little sad to come home to cook something, but she manages and she does enjoy cooking, not more than the rivers or thinking, but it's up there. The only thing she avoids is wasabi. She absolutely hates the flavour, but she is always willing to try new things.
