She sat alone in the cafeteria quietly eating her lunch. Willow had never been very popular in school and the only who would actually talk to her would be Xander. She had known him all her life and they were always close. Willow loved Xander, but could never tell him. She finished her lunch and walked towards the door. As she turned to go out into the hallway, she ran into someone. Willow fell to the ground and quickly looked up. She saw a young girl with long blonde hair staring down at her. “Do I know you”? Willow asked as the girl bent over to see if she was okay. “N...no, I..a just started here, My name is Tara”. Willow got up and shook hands with the girl. “I’m Willow Rosenberg, nice to meet you”. Tara nodded and began to pick up the things that she had dropped. “Well..I have to go. I’ll see you around”. Tara ran down the hallway and turned the corner to get out of Willow’s sight.
“That was weird”, Willow thought as she realized she was late and ran to class. Tara sat against the wall trying to catch her breath. Tara too had never been very popular, she always wanted a friend that was a girl but, she always seemed to get along with guys better and she never understood why. She stood up fixed her clothes and headed to class. After school Tara searched the hallways for Willow, for the girl that actually talked her on her first day. She headed to the library hoping that Willow might be there. When she walked in she found a tall man in tweed reading something. “Hello”. Tara said nervously as she approached the man.
The man looked up from his book and stared at Tara wondering who she was. “Can I help you”? The man asked as he came from behind table he was at. “My name is Tara, I’m new and I was wondering if a..Willow was here”? The man thought for a moment while cleaned his glasses, he looked up and replied. “I’m Mr. Giles the librarian, and Willow hasn’t come by yet but, she should come looking for some new books any time now if you would care to wait”.
Tara put her books down and began to look around the library. She had never had a library at her old school and Sunnydale high seemed so much more interesting then her old high school. As she turned into one of the stacks she heard the door swing open. She looked to see Willow carrying a stack of books along with her backpack. “Hey Giles, I have some books to return”. Giles looked up and instructed Willow to lay them in his office. When she returned she walked over and sat down. “So what’s up Giles”? Willow asked as she began to take out her homework. “Same as usual Willow, Oh a young came looking for you. I think she might be in the back somewhere”. Willow got up and headed for the stairs to the stacks.
Tara was in the middle of reading ‘The History of Magic’ when Willow came into the isle and smiled when she saw who it was. “Tara, what are you doing here”? Willow asked as she came over to meet Tara. “I was j.just looking for you”. Tara replied as she put the book back on the shelf. “Really Why would you be looking for me though?” Willow asked sounding uninteresting. “I wanted to apologize for running off earlier and I wanted t-to see if you would like to hang out sometime.” Tara was very shy and was amazed that she actually was trying to make friends. “You want to hang out with me? Why, no one else does. Well besides Xander.” Willow asked confused but, at the same time flattered.
Tara was surprised to hear what Willow was saying. She thought Willow was nice, why wouldn’t anyone want to hang out with her? She stared at Willow for a moment before coming up with an answer. “Listen Willow, I’m new to this school. I was hoping to find some friends and when we bumped into each other, I felt something. I don’t know what I’m going on about I just think that we were meant to meet and I would like to be friends with you.”
Willow smiled slightly when she heard this, someone actually liked her and wanted to be friends. “Tara, I would love to hang out with you. Xander and I are going to the bronze tonight, you should come.” Tara thought for a moment, trying to find some way to get out of it. She wanted to hang around with Willow but, she didn’t know Xander and she was very shy. After a moment she couldn’t think of anything so she agreed and left Willow in the stacks.

Tara walked home with a feeling of enthusiasm and joy, she had made a friend. Tara thought about all the things that they might do that night and then she realized that she didn’t know where the Bronze was. She walked with a sense of worry in her head until she saw someone standing at a crosswalk. Tara rushed over to see who it was, hoping that they knew where the Bronze was. Tara slowed her pace as she approached the person not wanting to seem crazy, “Excuse me. Can I ask you something?” The stranger turned to face Tara, she was a young woman with long blonde hair. The woman had a curious look on her face when she spoke, “Hello, have we met?” Tara quickly responded “N-n-o, I’m Tara. I was wondering if you knew where the Bronze was?”
The girl thought for a moment then responded politely, “Nice to meet you Tara. I’m Buffy Summers. The Bronze is two blocks down from here and over about three streets.” Tara was relieved that she found someone from Sunnydale. “Thank you very much. You sure know your way around Sunnydale”. Tara responded with a smile. “I get around. I’m knew here but, I think I got the basic directions”. Tara was shocked to hear that she wasn’t the only new person to Sunnydale. “Really, I-I’m new too, I just moved here about a week ago.” Tara said annoyed that she had stuttered again.
Buffy smiled and replied, “That is so weird. Hey do you want to hang out sometime?” Tara was amazed again that she was making friends. “Sure, I am actually meeting some people I just met at the Bronze tonight. Would you like to come?” Buffy smiled and nodded accepting. Buffy waved good-bye and then headed down the road towards her house. Tara stood with a smile on her face for a moment. She was actually making friends and not being alone for once.
That night Tara felt the sense of butterflies all around in her stomach as she sat on her bed getting ready to go out. You’ll be fine just be yourself and don’t stutter, Tara thought to herself as she began to put her outfit on. As she headed out into the night to meet her new friends, Tara got a feeling that everything would go okay tonight. ....Boy was she in for a surprise.
