I remember how Clinton's health care initiative went spectacularly down in flames because he plowed ahead on what was right, as opposed to what was politically feasible. If he'd handled things more gracefully, more slowly, with more inclusion of differing opinions, we might have universal health care coverage by now.
At the same time, gay rights advocates have to continue to hold Obama's feet to the fire. Without a very loud and insistent chorus demanding equality as a human right, he has neither the impetus nor the political capital to work with in the next 3.5 years.
I'm not filing for divorce. I'm just going to become a nagging shrew so that no one on the opposite side can say "See? You have no popular support!" I think Obama must go slowly, but we have to provide the push to continue at all.
AND I think he needs to realize that many many people support gay rights! How many families (like mine) have members who are gay? Good Lord, is the man just stupid. I don't get it at all. I'm with oddprofessor - letting him know, loudly and often that we won't let him off the hook is a tactic I can live with. I'm not ready for divorce (vestiges of ye olde former faithe....) Hang in there, kiddo!
