Ahh, I remember when that used to be my perspective on that kind of art... It may seem lazy and half-assed, but unfortunately it was making a statement about society and the art culture at the time of its conception, and is a valid response and important part of art history. I can see why this would frustrate you, I've been there... but it's not a "loophole". There are actually an infinite number of definitions of "art", and if one artist chooses to express himself that way, you have to learn to appreciate it and learn the message that was trying to be conveyed. I'm not saying you should worship modern art or anything, hell I still don't really like it... but it's important, especially for me, to understand that you don't have to make pretty pictures to call it art.
At least, this is what I think. Again, I can't force this on you... you are entitled to your own opinion about art... that's what makes it so great!

And the best part is, it's not a picture of one hanging upside down. It's just a toilet upside down. And that's the sculpture.
