Technical problems... resolved

After spending most of yesterday evening try to fix it, my computer is now back in a state where it actually boots up without immediately restarting, which is nice. The key clue to what was wrong with it came when brucec helpfully asked in a comment to my previous post if I used AVG, which I do. So is everything back to normal, or is the AVG still causing problems? Granted, some progress is better than none.....

AVG apparently issued an updated update which stops their program completing breaking their customer's computers. So it should all work fine now, hopefully.

I recommend Avast instead of AVG if you need a free anti-virus program. I used AVG until about a year ago, but the version they released around that time (I forget the number) was an incredible resource hog. Avast is similar in terms of results but much less resource-heavy (and so far hasn't caused my computer to refuse booting up!).

I've used Avast for about four years and never had a problem with it, so it gets my vote.
