I've never read the books (though my wife is a huge fan of them) and really enjoyed the first episode. Lots of intersating plotlines and characters. Despite having a massive cast it was easy enough to follow, I thought. Although there was a bit of "dearest sister" dialogue to set up the relationships, it wasn't too intrusive. However, although I'm no prude, the sheer number of naked breasts in the pilot was a tiny bit gratuitous!

It's actually fairly faithful to the book in that regard (only the scene of Tyrion in the brothel was made up), but it is more noticeable in the show.
