The thing about getting close to people was that it was mostly involuntary, the sort of thing that happened before a person could realize it. Sam, for his part, had spent the better part of his life trying to avoid exactly that, and had done a damn good job of it, too, keeping even the most important people in his life at a distance. Somehow, ( Read more... )

"Not at all," Eden answered, smiling at the two of them, hands folded demurely over the book in her hands, held just below her waist. In the last weeks before the inevitable snowfall - it hadn't failed once in the nearly five years she had been here - she always felt more inclined to dress as girlishly as possible, giving into fussing over sundresses and strappy heels before the weather took away the option. It made even going to classes feel like playacting and coming home a strangely leisurely activity.

So she was in no rush when the path ahead of her turned out to be occupied, and it didn't hurt that the cause was a cute guy and his adorable dog. She was a sucker for a guy with a dog, but wasn't everyone? It was just about as bad as guys with babies or instruments. "On the contrary, I'd hate to get in the way of his dinner."

"I was going to wait until I got him home, but I guess he wasn't feeling up to being patient today," Sam explained, smile broadening as he looked up at the woman. Biased as he was in Marvin's favor with just about anything, her not minding made him all the more inclined to be friendly on its own, even if she hadn't been nice to look at as well. The two together was a pretty great combination, leaving him with no reason to be brusque or even less than amiable. "He loves these things. The Winchester might not be an In-N-Out, but still."

"Oh, a California boy," laughed Eden. It was that or Vegas, last she knew of. The chain wasn't exactly widespread, unless he meant another in some other universe that happened to have the same name, which was every bit as possible. On the off chance she was right, though, she always liked sounding as if she knew what she was talking about. "Well, I can't say I blame him. Patience has never been one of my strong suits either, though, so I'm a little biased. Plus, In-n-Out or not, they are pretty good."

"Born and raised," Sam said, grinning, hands held up as if in a show of surrender. It was probably a ridiculous thing to be glad for, but given how possible it was for someone not to know what he was referring to - and when he was so used to spending time with Quorra, with whom he always had to watch what he said, or launch into an explanation - it was always nice when someone else picked up on something right away. "They are good, though, I'll give them that." Pausing a beat, he added, "I'm Sam, by the way. And this little guy is Marvin."
