FANDOM: Supernatural (tv series)

CLASS: Hero! Just an odd one.
SUPERHERO NAME: He really wouldn't bother at all. He wouldn't even understand the point of a secret identity or a superhero name.
ALTER EGO: Castiel, angel of the Lord? He... Doesn't get it.

BACKGROUND:

Castiel enters in the first episode of season four, as the angel who pulls Dean's soul out of Hell. It's revealed that a large number of angels laid siege to Hell (the group was possibly the angel garrison Castiel was the leader of, but that's never been confirmed) and that it was very difficult to reach Dean, but Castiel was the first to do so. His handprint in burned into Dean's shoulder as an indicator of this.

As angels need human vessels to walk on Earth, Castiel takes the vessel of a man named Jimmy Novak from Illinois, and goes to meet with Dean after he is summoned. Throughout the first few episodes he appears in, he provides little help or information aside from the most basic: demons, lead by the first demon Lilith, are trying to raise Lucifer by breaking 66 of the 666 seals that hold the fallen angel in his prison. Dean and Sam are tasked with stopping individual seals as they were discovered and appropriate, as the angels take point on other seals scattered about. Castiel checks in on Dean and Sam often, though he's away most of the time guarding other seals.

Eventually, there is opportunity for Castiel and Sam to meet face to face, as it's revealed that a seal is about to be broken in the town the brothers are in. The angels have decided it is necessary to level the entire town to protect the seal and warn the Winchesters to leave, but Dean refuses to allow the innocent people in the town to be wiped out. Castiel and the specialist brought in for this task, Uriel, eventually acquiesce and allow Dean and Sam to try their hand at protecting the seal. The brothers fail, but Dean and Castiel have a chance for a private conversation, where Castiel reveals that his and Uriel's orders had not been to destroy the town, but to defer to Dean's decision, whatever it might be. In addition, Castiel explains that he agreed with Dean's choice, and admits under an agreement of secrecy that he is beginning to doubt the orders he is being given, something with is rare and dangerous for an angel to do.

When the fallen angel Anna is found living as a human (with even her unaware of what she was at first), Castiel and Uriel are sent to kill her. Turns out she was once their commander, who whose to Fall and become human because angels aren't allowed to question, doubt, feel, or do anything that might lead to disobedience. She regains her grace, which is what gives an angel their power and makes them an angel, and flees.

Angels begin to die mysteriously, the only connection between them being that they were all members of the garrison Castiel, Anna, and Uriel belong to. The powerful and high-ranking demon Alastair is blamed for the murders, and the angels order that Dean be brought in to extract a confession and an explanation from Alastair, using the skills that Dean learned in Hell. He is reluctant, and so is Castiel, but it's revealed that Castiel has been demoted and Uriel put in charge, due to concern that Castiel's attachment to the Winchesters is clouding his judgment. While Castiel waits outside as Dean works, Anna appears and begins trying to teach the other angel to think for himself, and to question the orders he's being given. Alastair escapes and nearly kills Dean and is attempting to exorcise Castiel until Sam enters and destroys the demon, but not before learning that the demons were not responsible for the deaths of the angels.

Castiel puts two and two together and realizes an angel is the one killing the other angels, and confronts Uriel, who is revealed to be attempting to release Lucifer. After a battle, Anna kills Uriel to protect Castiel, but the angel is left with even more uncertainty and doubt about his orders and who they're actually coming from, and why.

He continues to assist the brothers, edging closer and closer to the line of what is considered acceptable for an angel to do, including surreptitiously telling Dean how to get around a divine prophecy. Eventually, he appears to Dean in a dream and asks to meet with him, needing to tell him something but concerned he's being watched. By the time the brothers get to the location to meet up, there is evidence an enormous battle went down and they find Jimmy Novak, who tells them Castiel's been forcibly taken back to Heaven.

When Castiel returns at the end of that episode, he is cold and impassive again, refusing to tell Dean whatever it was he'd wanted to reveal before. For the next few episodes, he is completely unhelpful, going along with whatever his current superior, Zachariah, decides on. While holding Dean in a fanciful room to keep him 'safe', Zachariah reveals that the angels were never intending to stop the breaking of the seals, and in fact they were going to allow Sam to kill Lilith, which would be the 66th and release Lucifer. Dean is desperate to stop his brother and tries to convince Castiel to let him go, telling him that there's a right and a wrong and Castiel KNOWS that this is wrong, but Castiel responds that if he rebels and helps them, all three of them would be hunted down and killed. Dean tells him that it was worth it, and though Castiel initially refuses and disappears, he returns a short time later to banish Zachariah and release Dean, sending him after Sam as Castiel stays back to hold off the other angels.

Sam and Dean fail to stop the breaking of the seal, and Lucifer is released. They go to find Castiel, to learn that he has been killed by the archangel Raphael. Zachariah shows up and through the episode Dean learns that is the destined vessel of the archangel Michael, but like any other angel Michael needs consent to use him as a vessel, which he intends to do so that he can destroy Lucifer and bring upon paradise. Dean, however, refuses to give Michael consent, and Zachariah begins torturing him and Sam to attempt to get him to comply. Castiel suddenly reappears, dispatches Zach's lackeys, and convinces the other angel to retreat. It's unknown who resurrected Castiel, but there are very few with the power to do so and Castiel believes it was God himself, who has been absent from Heaven for a long time. However, Castiel is now a fallen angel, cut off from Heaven and it's power; he immediately loses the ability to heal.

Castiel decides to search for God, to help them in the battle against Lucifer. He comes and goes for the next span of episodes, busy with his search; he does spend a full day with Dean however, as they trap Raphael and ask him about God's whereabouts. The archangel tells them that God is dead, and that Castiel was probably raised by Lucifer instead, because Lucifer needs rebellious angels for his army.

As Dean and Sam confront an old enemy, a demi-god known as The Trickster, they get trapped in a strange set of alternate realities. Castiel goes looking for them and ends up in the mess as well; together, the three piece out that The Trickster is actually no such thing. It's revealed that he is instead the archangel Gabriel, who wouldn't stand his brothers' fighting and fled to Earth.

Castiel is briefly captured by Lucifer during a mission and they have a bit of a strange discussion, as Lucifer gently and charmingly tries to win over his brother to his side. He points out, correctly, that as Castiel is now a fallen angel, it would be in his best interests to help Lucifer; if Lucifer is defeated, Castiel suddenly takes his place as Heaven's most wanted. Castiel, however, refuses as he is unwilling to allow Lucifer access to Sam, who is Lucifer's true vessel. Castiel manages to escape and rescues the brothers, their mission to kill Lucifer using the Colt a failure.

In between his search for God, Castiel continues to assist the boys. He nearly kills himself taking them back in time to stop Anna, who is intent on destroying Dean and Sam's mother so that the boys are never born, averting the apocalypse. He also assists, ultimately unhelpfully, in the battle with the Horseman Famine.

Dean and Sam are killed and go to Heaven, and as Zachariah and the other angels will resurrect them as soon as possible Castiel suggests the two use the opportunity they have to find an angel named Joshua. Joshua is rumored to speak with God, and when the Winchesters do find him, he confirms it was God who brought Castiel back to life but that beyond that, God wasn't interfering as He believes the apocalypse is 'not His problem'. The boys return to Earth and deliver the news to Castiel, who is devastated at the news and completely loses his faith.

Next time Sam and Dean see him, he's drank an entire liquor store and, despite his angelic constitution, managed to get completely smashed drunk. He helps them fight the Whore of Babylon, but is serious injured. Dean decides to accept the deal with Michael and leaves, and Sam and Castiel give chase, eventually catching up to him before he says yes. At this point, however, Castiel's faith in Dean is also damaged, and he goes through with a suicidal plan to dispatch five angels to give Dean and Sam time to rescue their brother Adam, who is apparently a back-up vessel for the archangel. The brothers fail and Adam is taken.

With Castiel gone, the brothers receives help from Gabriel, but the archangel is killed in a confrontation with Lucifer. In a very strange 'will', Gabriel explains to the brothers that if they get all four rings of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, they can open Lucifer's cage and toss him in, which is a better plan than trying to kill him. The Winchesters already have the rings of Famine and War, and as they prepare to go after Pestilence they receive as call from a hospital: Castiel is alive, but mortal. He arrives just in time to save the brothers from Pestilence, and they get the third ring.

It simply requires a discussion with Death to get the last Horseman to hand over his ring, and Sam plans to say yes to Lucifer, then wrestle control from the devil and jump into the cage. Unsurprisingly this doesn't go over well; Lucifer has full control, and Castiel and Sam and Dean's friend Bobby pretty much decide to give up and wait for the end. Dean refuses to do so, and heads to the battlefield where Michael (using Adam as his vessel) and Lucifer (using Sam) are set to fight. Castiel and Bobby join them, Castiel throwing a molotov cocktail of holy fire at Michael in order to banish him temporarily, giving Dean an opportunity to try to get through to Sam. Lucifer kills Castiel for this, then Bobby. Eventually, Sam does regain control and throws himself into the cage, accidentally dragging Michael with him.

Castiel is suddenly back, resurrected by God yet again, with his powers fully restored. He heals Dean and raises Bobby, before returning to Heaven to try to put things back in some sort of order now that Michael is gone. Heaven ends up splitting into a civil war, with Castiel versus Raphael as the leaders.

Throughout the sixth season Castiel appears little, showing up every so often to provide advice or firepower when necessary, but for the most part he is very distracted by the battle in Heaven. Every time he appears he is worn down and tired, serious and a bit frustrated by the brothers' lack of concern about the civil war, though not providing them with any information on his end that would help them understand. Castiel does discover that a close friend of his, Balthazar, who had been presumed dead, was actually alive and hiding on Earth along with a massive collection of stolen Heavenly weapons. Castiel appeals to his friend for the weapons, as they will help him turn the tide of the battle with Raphael, but Balthazar refuses for a long while. Eventually, however, Balthazar changes his mind and turns the weapons over to Castiel, giving him and his army a fighting chance for control of Heaven.

PERSONALITY:

Castiel is quiet and reserved, and extremely intense. He rarely acts without thinking through the consequences, and is very analytical and logical in decision making. Though when he first appeared he seemed incapable of making any sort of decisions for himself, he quickly grows independent and capable, and eventually ends up a leader. Angels are discouraged from showing or expressing any sort of emotion (except apparently anger, which they all seem quite good at) and so upon his introduction in the series Castiel is very new to understanding and acting on what he feels, not even beginning to do so until midway through season four. By the point that he's gotten to in the show, he is aware of and understands the more common emotions of both himself and those he's close to, but beyond that he still tends to be pretty clueless. He also tends to do what is necessary over anything else, including his own feelings, though he does try most of all to do what is right.

He has a temper, but it takes a ridiculous amount to provoke it into showing. He is determined, focused, and exceptionally clever; sneaky and creative, he's talented at coming up with unusual solutions or plans for even the most difficult situation. He enters situations and conflicts rather fearlessly, but is pretty easily intimidated by anyone or anything truly more powerful than he is. He's intensely loyal, and when he throws his allegiance behind a person or cause he'll stick with it to the very end. He rarely shows emotion (aside from confusion) on his face, and he is very stiff and controlled and a bit awkward when it comes to posture or body language. He is wary of others and slow to trust anyone, even his own angel brethren, mostly due to having literally both heaven and hell attempting to kill him for about a year. He is terrible at humor or sarcasm, though he is showing some progress in understanding both recently.

Castiel often appears to be allergic to managing more than two sentences at a time to anyone not named 'Dean Winchester'. He usually says as little as possible, being direct and to the point, without bothering to elaborate on anything (and what he considers 'elaborating' is most peoples' 'basic necessary information'.) Dragging information out of him is like pulling teeth, and that's when he actually likes you. He's has a habit of simply disappearing when he's done talking about a subject, with no warning at all.

Also Castiel has no concept at all of personal space, whether his own or someone else's. He routinely talks to people from approximately two feet away, despite Dean and Sam's attempts to teach him that this is creepy and not acceptable.

POWER:

In Supernatural, beings don't really tend to have 'magic' of their own; there is magic, including sigils, spells, etc, but they are universal and able to be used by anyone, even regular humans. Supernatural creatures simply have supernatural abilities, which are the case of the angels. Even the lowest ranking angels have an extensive list of powers, including rapid or instantaneous healing (both of themselves and humans), telekinesis, teleportation, traditional sixth sense, ability to sense deception or lies, superhuman strength, resistance to supernatural powers or manipulation, immunity to disease, dream manipulation, resurrection of humans, invulnerability to the vast majority of weapons, exorcism of demons by touch, and others.

As all these powers are separate of each other rather than rolled up into innate 'magic' (as evidenced by the fact that as Castiel continues to Fall, he loses powers one by one), in picking three for Castiel to keep I would select the telekinesis and teleportation (which is instantaneous and usable for just himself, for himself and passengers, or for others without him) as well as the supernatural sixth sense that allows him to recognize different types of creatures, sense presences, recognize magical influences, and assorted other pretty tradition sixth sense abilities.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:

[Fortunately, though not particular adept with electronics, Castiel has enough experience with phones to figure out his communicator... Albeit not exceptionally skillfully. Audio turns on first, complete with sounds of rustling and beeping and and general fumbling noises. Finally video follows, revealing a man with dark hair and incredibly blue eyes that don't blink. He looks faintly confused and a bit displeased, eyebrows furrowed slightly, and it takes him a moment to figure out where the camera actually is. His voice is deeper than would be expected when he speaks.]

Who does this communication device reach? And why have I received these items?

[He pulls the dog tags from the pocket of his too-large trench coat, giving them a brief glance of curiosity, clearly having no idea what they are. His eyes turn back to the screen, still intent and unblinking.]

This is not where I should be, and I must return. Who is the authority here? Someone must have answers for this.

[There is a pause as he glances around at something off screen, before he steps back a bit farther into what appears to be an alley. When he addresses the communicator again, he is frowning slightly and his voice holds an edge.]

Whoever is responsible for this, cease hiding and reveal yourself. I am waiting, and expect an explanation.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

It was with a flash of confusion that Castiel found himself where he was, and though it was incredibly unclear where that was, it was definitely not Heaven. And considering that was where he'd just been, in the middle of a battle, it was a sudden and jarring change of scenery and he had to stop in the middle of a swing of his angel sword, as he realized there was no longer an enemy in front of him.

Instead, there was something familiar that took a moment to place: a computer screen? Confused and slightly startled, the voice that welcomed him caught his attention a moment later, and did absolutely nothing to clear up situation. Neither did it help when the machine spat out unfamiliar objects, one resembling a cell phone (at least something was recognizable) the other a set of some sort of pendants? He hesitated a moment, stretching his senses in an attempt to get his bearings; as he felt no immediate danger, with a flick of his wrist his sword disappeared back up his sleeve and he reached to pick up the new items.

Stepping from the platform and away from the computer, he left the building as quickly as possible and set foot onto the streets. Glancing around at his surroundings, he took in the very mundane and seemingly innocent sights around him, growing even more confused. A few more steps and he stopped, standing quietly near the wall of some sort of shop--it was a bakery, he could tell by the sweet smell on the air--he just watched a few moments as people passed by, paying no attention to him. He was practically invisible, simply another in a group of many, some hurrying towards their destinations and others wandering aimlessly, lost. This feeling was oddly familiar.

Pulling himself from the sea of motion and intent, he cast a look around at his surroundings once more. It looked like any other city he'd ever been in, and he'd been to many; it seemed to be a western one, probably American, but that was about all that was obvious at first glance. It was of little concern to him at the moment where he was, really, as there were much more pressing issues. Like that he couldn't feel the presence of Heaven.

There were reasons why this might be, but none of them boded especially well, and he was concerned. He thought first of the alternate dimension that his brother Balthazar had recently sent the Winchesters to, but he couldn't think of a reason why or how he would have gotten there himself, let alone without remembering. There were many other dimensions and timelines that could also serve as explanations for his location, but the same issues of why and how remained. He also had to figure out what he had to do to get back.

A payphone call with some change donated by a kind college student failed to reach it's intended recipient, despite that Castiel was entirely sure of the number he'd dialed. It was one of the only three he'd ever had reason to use, and it should have worked. That it didn't just added to the feeling of unease growing in his chest.

Eyes narrowed slightly, Castiel hung up the phone, and his attention was caught by a smear of red on the plastic of the receiver. Glancing down at his hand, he saw the reason; he'd been nicked by a sword in battle--his own or his opposing brother's, he didn't know and it didn't matter--and there was a delicate line of blood across his palm. Nothing to be impressed by, except that it shouldn't be there. A non-fatal injury, it should have repaired nearly instantly... But it hadn't, which meant he wasn't healing.

Something was very wrong here.

He felt some indistinct and complex emotion he couldn't quite name, not quite fear or worry, maybe apprehension? There was a pressing sense of urgency adding to the unease, also. Whatever was going on and where ever he had ended up, it didn't seem benign; likely he'd been sent here to get him out of the way, and if that was true, then his friends and the entire world were in danger. He had to get back, and he would. He just had to figure out how.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
In Supernatural, angels can only manifest on Earth in a willing vessel's body and Castiel was no exception; his vessel was a man named Jimmy Novak. However, it is a source of confusion and debate as to whether Jimmy survived Castiel's first death, let alone his foray into mortality and his second death. Though there is some evidence he returned with Castiel the first time it seems unlikely that he did the second, due to that Castiel travels back and forth from Heaven in the sixth season without abandoning his vessel as angels do when they return. It's probable that Castiel, like former angel Anna, has his own created body by this point, which is what I'm going to go with unless there are any issues about it.
