I like Ice Hockey!
Yes I, sarah jane, am an Ice hockey fan.
I am not a sports fan. I don't mind rugby, I dislike football (soccer for those of you across the pond), and I can't stand cricket!
But I love Ice Hockey!
The slice of the skates as they race down the ice, the whack of the puck as they hit it in the net, the crunch of the nose as Bomber (or Greener or Bairdy or whoever on at the time) knocks the opposition out. I love it!
Which is why it's so frustrating that there is never any coverage of it.
I've been going to matches for a couple of years now, after some friends dragged me along to the play off finals, and now I'm hooked. I'm on the forums every day, I read up about gretzsky and the like, I even watch slapshot!
But when I try and actually watch some hockey from the luxery of my home, what do i find?
Six Nations Rugby! Premiership Football! England losing yet again at the cricket!!!!!
I managed to watch half a match of the British Elitle League match between Coventry and Sheffield last night, before my brother took control of the remote and made me watch QI. Now I like Stephen Fry as much as the next literate Brit, but I wanted pads, and sticks. Not facts and giggles! Where was all the hockey?! I'm seriously considering subscribing to ESPN so that I can watch some NHL matches, but the season is almost finished, and I'm not reall a fan of NFL so don't want to bother subscribing just yet for a channel I won't watch for another six months.
And another thing, the town in live in doesn't have much in the way of a sports following. Their football club is pathetic, the Rugby club middling (although the building was very popular for 18th birthdays due to the high chances of getting served) and the cricket club is non-existant. The nearest decent mainstream sporting team, is twenty minutes away.
However we do have a fairly decent Ice Hockey team. They won the EPL cup last year, and won both the cup and the league the year before that. We're usually considered one of the best teams in our league (not counting some very inconsistant permformances this season). So why is it, that even when we're doing well, the hockey news can still get relegated to the inside pages of the local news! The Sunday League football team had a bigger headline than us last week! GRRRRR!
Okay, rant over!
On a related note, here are my boys in action (We're the team in the yellow, whupping Telford's ass!) Go Bees!
