This was nice and felt like the beginning of something bigger; it made me curious as to what such a reunion would be like and how everyone might have changed.

I especially liked all the details about Renji's observations, such as the way his fiancee lines up the tea and cup and his thoughts about the tone of Yukimura's message.

I have to agree with you. I reached the end of the story and I had to blink and refresh because it kind of leaves you wanting more.

Thank you :) After everyone mentioned it, I realized that it does sound more like a prologue than a standalone. But I'm glad you enjoyed it all the same.

You could tell a lot about a person from reading their scientific essays. Often, you could tell so much they would be uncomfortable if they knew. Of course, not everyone in the teaching profession would want such a privilege. But for Yanagi, catching glimpses of strong personalities from students who barely spoke during class - or the opposite, which was discovering that a student was nothing but bluster and bravado with little real intelligence - was always a pleasure. It allowed him to see which students needed to be pushed into thinking further outside the box, which ones should be left to their own devices, and which he would simply have to ignore.

I just wanted to say how much I loved this opening. :) Wonderful writing and like arahannan, I can't help but wish there was more.

Thank you :) I didn't mean the opening to be some sort of a frame to the story, but then I saw it could serve nicely as that.

(Placeholder for squee--I'm so sorry I've been so busy, but I will be right back when I've read this!)

♥♥♥♥♥♥ OH WOW. Just about every prompt was included, and oh, the ties that bind us! The fiancee (SO COOL), the postcard (secret kink I didn't even realize I had), Renji the Asian lit professor, tea (♥!), ooooh. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Thank you, anon, whoever you are--this was indeed a wonderful present! ♥ I can't stop thinking about the part where the fiancee places the tea for Renji so precisely, and how Renji likes being idly curious as to whether she does it because she likes it or because she thinks he'll like it! And that passage about the types of students and how one can tell from the essays--oh lord, my teacher's heart is clutching to it! ♥♥♥

I was so glad you liked it. I wrote this at the last minute due to NaNo, and tbh I was in doubt about the characterizations :) Also tbh, I didn't even remember about your being a teacher when I wrote it - I just focused on the "Asian lit professor" aspect, end everything else flowed on from there.

Thank you - the characterization was one of the aspects I fretted about most, actually.
