Love or something like it.

This week at Checkmated, we posted a question in our Meta Monday thread about who was the first (Ron or Hermione) to realize they loved the other. It sparked a few comments about the concept of "love at first sight," which made me curious. So what do you guys think?

Wow, tough questions there, Willow.

Love is to me very much influenced by our personal values and upbringing as well as the representation we have of it. I like the difference you make with infatuation et al.

The one true love, the soulmate - such a lovely concept, and as much as I would love to believe in it - no. I think it has more to do with our human nature seeking for elevation and absolute.

Love at first sight is a bit tricky. People definitely do confuse love and lust, but there IS a difference and it's easy to tell them apart if you really think about it ( ... )

I believe you can be taken by someone at first sight, but I don't believe in love at first sight. I think love involves so many emotions wrapped into one, it's too complicated for it to start (or end) in a moment. To really love takes time ( ... )

Do I believe in love at first sight?
Nope. You can't love someone you do not know. BUT, you can be attracted to someone instantly in a far stronger way than you have been attracted before. That is not love: it's lust, strong lust but lust all the same. I've experienced this one myself. I did meet a guy and it was very different right away than anything I'd experienced before and I did fall in love with him... but not at first sight. Some people confuse strong lust and obsession with love but no, not the same thing.

Do I believe in "soulmates?"Yes, but not in the way you might think. I love my husband but I think I could love someone else and I think he could do the same, if one of us dies. I would hope he would if I died; I wouldn't want him to be alone ( ... )

There is definitely lust at first sight and strong attraction at first sight and even like at first sight. But real love is something else.

And I definitely believe in soulmates (especially since I truly believe I'm married to mine *grins*)!

**hugs you tight**
