New Book Challenge 2008 - 15/52 - Review - The Secret Garden

Book 15 (so more than a quarter done....). List is here.

Although I knew the rough story of what happens in this book from Noel Streatfeild's The Painted Garden, I'd never read the book, but it was wonderful. I found myself laughing with the children (especially when Mistress Mary starts speaking broad Yorkshire...) and wanting the secret to be kept. I think I was expecting the adult character's to be less sympathetic (The film in Streatfeild's book again), but even though they weren't the ogres I was expecting them to be, they were still wondefully drawn characters, and even though she starts out as such an un-sympathetic and spoilt character. You can't help but feel sorry for Mary after she'd been left in the cottage after the deaths of everyone else.

Next will be either Behold the Man or Anne's House of Dreams, although I suspect a re-read of The Painted Garden might elbow it's way in as well...
