Summary: A twist on the dinner scene when Kevin takes Robert up on his job offer (sorry, I can't remember what episode that is right now).
Warnings: Canonical slash
Notes: I own nothing.
Kevin walked into the restaurant feeling defeated and embarrassed. He never thought himself as a failure, until now. All he wanted now was to be surrounded by his husband's arms and reassured it would all be okay. But no. He had dinner with the in-laws. As much as he loved Scotty, the Wandells always made him nervous, so he always wound up looking like an ass to them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Wandell!" Kevin said with fake enthusiasm.
"Hello Kevin," Mrs. Wandell said in her normal cold voice.
Kevin wondered if she saw him shudder as they shook hands.
"I'm so sorry I'm late. I, uh, had some last minute business at the office. Kitty, Robert, so glad you could make it."
Kevin could see the disappointment in Scotty's eyes. He hoped against hope that Scotty would understand.
"Scotty, can I see you for a moment please?"
"Kevin."
One word and already Kevin could hear the extreme agitation in Scotty's voice.
"Don't you think you're being rude?"
"Please Scotty, I promise I'll explain everything. To everyone. I just need to tell you first. Please."
"I'm so sorry. I'll be right back."
Once in the hallway by the bathrooms, Scotty hissed, "Okay, what is it?"
"I didn't get it. I didn't make partner. I was so certain I would. And they didn't give it to me. I'm such a failure."
Kevin sank to a bench and buried his face with his hands.
"I quit my job. I've failed you. I've failed us."
"Oh Kevin," Scotty said as he sat next to him. "You haven't failed anyone."
Scotty wrapped his arms around Kevin who turned to bury his face in Scotty's shoulder.
"I love you so much Kevin. I don't ever want you to think else wise. I am so proud fo you. I will always be proud of you."
Kevin looked up to kiss Scotty.
"I love you too."
"Okay, so what are we doing to do? I can try and get more hours--"
"No taht won't be necessary," Kevin interrupted. "Robert and Kitty offered me Kitty's job as Communication's Director. I know I'll be good at it, and I will be making a difference."
"Okay."
"Really?"
"Yes. Just. . .don't drink from the Kool-aid."
Kevin laughed.
"I think we're safe from that."
"Hey is everything okay?" Kitty asked, causing the two men to jump.
"Yeah. We'll be right back," Kevin said.
Kitty turned and left.
"Thank you Scotty," Kevin said, squeezing the hand on Scotty's knee.
With a kiss, Scotty said, "You're welcome."
"I want to apologize for this whole night. The reason I was late and postponed this dinner was because I was hoping to make partner. They were announcing it today, and I was certain I would get it. And I thought that maybe then you wouldn't hate me so much. BUt I couldn't get that, and I quit, so now you'll hate me even more."
"Kevin, I think you've misunderstood us. Yes we don't agree with your lifestyle. But that doesn't mean we hate you. Scott's still our baby, and we want him to be happy. I may not approve, and I may not understand, but you make him happy. He lights up at the mention of your name. He loves you, and from what I see, you love him too. So no, we don't hate you."
"Thank you Mrs. Wandell."
"Kevin, you can still work for me," Robert offered.
"Thank you.
"And Mr. Wandell, I promise if you come by our place tomorrow, I promise to have a present you'll like, not one I like."
"Kevin, please, you married my son. It's Wally."
Not wanting to seem evil, Mrs. Wandell siad, "you can call me Bertha."
"Thank you Mom and Dad," Scotty said.
And with tears in his eyes, Scotty hugged his parents.
