It wasn't supposed to be like this. A marriage was supposed to last. It was binding. Hermione twisted her ring around her finger, feeling the weight of her sadness settle on her like a wet cloak.

Ron appeared in the doorway, his face blank. She looked up, wishing she could find even a trace of a smile on his lips. She needed reassuring; her whole world had been shaken. He sat down beside her, taking her hands into his and stilling them.

"Promise me we won't be like them," she said, her voice shaking.

"Never," he said vehemently, squeezing her hands. "It's okay to be sad. But we're not your parents. I would never..."

"We quarrel all the time," she said, a tear rolling down her cheek. "We don't even like the same things."

"Of course we do," he said. "We both like sitting in the meadow..."

"With you flying and me reading," she said.

"None of that matters, Hermione," he said. "It's never mattered. I love you because you're brave and brilliant. I always have."

"Not always," she said with a watery smile. "Not our first year."

"Well, you didn't much care for me either, if I recall correctly." He smiled for a moment, but grew somber again. "Look, Hermione. I know this is a lot to take in right now, but look at my parents. They don't share many interests, but they love each other madly."

"You think we'll be like them, then?"

"No," Ron said, smiling fondly. "We'll be better. We'll be us."
