So earlier today I am on my way to a Phillies game with my friend Matt. We pass a billboard with a beer ad, which proclaims that it is "The Cure For the Common Beer". The product being advertised is Miller Lite. I take it as a given that no beer (or any product, for that matter) is more "common" than Miller. So I say to Matt that there has to ( Read more... )

I think of that as Orwellian.

Is this the same beer that used to have an ad in the early nineties, "It's the alternative beer with the alternative taste!" I remember that commercial with particular contempt.

I don't remember that ad, but it does fit the attitude.

I remember asking a woman some years ago what kind of music she listened to. She said, "mainstream alternative."

Good term. There's another, somewhat similar phenomena that needs a name. I'm thinking particularly of the ad campaign for 7Up (or was it Sprite?) that went on at length about how the consumer should not be persuaded by glitzy meaningless advertisements and should instead "obey your thirst" and drink the product being advertised.

As an aside, I'm quite pleased that I can't remember the specific product in question. I know it was a clear carbonated soda, but that's all I can remember. I guess it means the memetic defeneses are holding well :).
