Clearly you should spend your time at renaissance festivals rather than conferences :P

The only thing one can do that is less expensive than ren faires... (Well, that and flight training, which is the next huge expense I'm pondering.)

are the conference costs write-able-off-able? Or do they not work well as deductions at this point?

And I don't know; probably so, but I'm not making enough money for taxes to be a huge issue. :) (Then again, I won't get to claim the Lifetime Learning credit, so maybe it will be.)
