here's the conundrum

How do you motivate people to do well and put in their all when they don't want to? I'm really plagued by this question right now. Alumni Today is DONE! I didn't have to do much and I also don't have to take it in until Monday morning but it is already done. Not half bad, actually. Encouraging ( Read more... )

welcome to our world circa 2004-2005. for this year to be a building year, the staff needs to be building something. it broke my heart when we had to cut pages. it's not building anything.

but you already know this.

and there isnt anything you arent doing. they just need to buck up and do the work.

Hey Willy,

I'm on break from college! So I'm thinking of coming in to visit on Wednesday and Ill help you scare the bejesus out of the kids to get their work done. Plus I need updates on how you've been. It's been a while. Also, Kyle Arnold is my boss at the Daily and he talked about coming in to visit too. Talk to you soon,
-Liz

Sup Coy-Dawg,

I decided I was going to apply to WSU, and I was shocked at how foofy the essay promt is. Its something about what you want to be remembered for on your 60th birthday. It just seems like it would be impossible to write an essay that doesnt drip sap worse than a sugar maple. Do you have any suggestions as to how to attack it without making the essay too sugary?

My advice: Be honest. It only becomes sap if you let it become sap. Dig deep, show WSU who you are and why you're so terrific (now it's my turn to drip sap). Remember, this is a story that shows who you are and not just an essay. It's funny, but I know a good story to tell them about you: How you decided to fight the good fight in favor of the First Amendment even against the dreaded AP District. That's what I'll remember you for. :)
Have you been following what has been happening in Everett?

I hadn't been following it, but I searched it out since you mentioned it. From what I read, it sounds like the students have a case against the school district. All they need to do is prove they opperated without administrative review and they have an open forum by practice. Plus, I think the part of their masthead declaring it a student forum helps.
My bet is with the students on this one, and with any luck, it might convince state legislature to do something.

now it is time to get back to writing an essay on heart of darkness. Its due in two hours, so I think I should get started. Maybe I should write my WSU essay comparing myself to kurtz. that might get interesting results... and perhaps a free psychiatric evaluation.

There's an essay scholarship sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists that I think you should apply for; the topic is Why Free News Media is Important. The link can be found on www.wjea.net. Did I mention it's a $1,000 scholarship on something you already basically wrote about?
