He's an asshole. I know they say conservatism is just another point of view, but it really is grounded in a mean-spirited intolerance for those members of society who weren't lucky enough to have a "Leave it to Beaver" life.

Under this Administration, I agree with your assessment about conservatism. But it wasn't always this way. Yes, conservatism is more about pulling yourself up by the proverbial bootstraps rather than giving a helping hand, but the mean-spirited intolerance is something that only came into fashion under Bush. Barry Goldwater, a true conservative, was never like this guy. And no, I'm most definitely not a conservative.

I agree, Goldwater stood for something completely different than Bush. Not that I agreed with him, but I at least have more respect for him. But the intolerance is bigger than this administration and extends to a majority of those in politics today that consider themselves to be conservatives. Barry Goldwater would not be comfortable with today's Republican party being so in bed with the religious right.

Well said. And no, Barry Goldwater would detest this alliance with the Religious Right. You're right that the atmosphere of intolerance is bigger than simply Bush and his cronies. I didn't make my point very well at all... People like Santorum, Huckabee, Brownback, Delay, et al are making a mockery of everything this country stands for. Thankfully, some of the herd is being thinned. But we've still got a lot of pruning to do.
