And in the meantime it would take them about as far away from him and his own hunt as he could manage. It was the only way to make sure they were safe, while he finished the job.

I think John never meant for the boys to be part of this particular hunt, but in DMB they kind off forced his hand.

This is excellent. A perfect slice-of-life moment that captures John to a T. I can see this just like an out-take of an episode, so very John. And such a very lonely John who's doing his best to take care of his boys. Oh, John ...

Yeah, the time he spend on his own must have been teriibly lonely too for John. He needs his boys as much as his boys need him.
