Yes, I love Johnny Depp (not to mention Helena Bonham Carter) (oh yah, and Alan Rickman) and would happily pay to have (or be) his (or her) (or his) love child. And yes, I'm well aware that there's a long, long line ahead of me for any one of those positions.

I too would gladly be the meat in a Depp/Rickman sandwich (appropriate for the subject matter?), but it was Helena who stole the show. Particularly in the "By the Sea" song. I'll be interested to see if you agree.

I've heard her and Depp do the Priest number. Video clips only show, like, 30 seconds but I've found audio clips of the whole song. Didn't so much like the way she started it. By the end of the song I was loveing her. I've resisted downloading anything else as I don't want to go in with those "preconceived notions."
Didn't go last night; you couldn't have paid me to leave the house in that nasty weather. Tonight, weather permitting ....

You can't pick up her splendor just by audio. She's not really a singer. But the costuming, Burton's visuals and Helena's impeccable acting sell the role. Mrs. Lovett's first scene (you may recall) is "The Worst Pies in London" which blew me away.

Mmm. Helena B-C. Blowing me away. Ope, cold shower time.

Best roll ever written for women in theatre who can't really sing a note. The audio of Angela doesn't generally work either. It's such a visual role. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference between the staging (minimal props and sets when I saw it, pretty sure it's available on video or DVD)and the "live action" set which (from the short clips I've seen) looks dank and dark and deary and grey and bleak, just as it should (oops, my inner goth is hanging out where people can see him. Sorry.)
