People have had since the mid-80s to learn how this disease is transmitted. Twenty years later, if you're not practicing safe sex, regardless of what your partner may say, then you're either stupid, or just really, really stupid.

In that light, to lie about one's status isn't criminal because the other party should be going about things safely regardless of what is said, not necessarily from a pessimistic viewpoint of 'everyone's a liar!' There are other, less insidious reasons why Safety First is the status quo: someone could be unwittingly infected too recently since their last test, for example. Lots of other reasons pop to mind.

To draw a parallel, if you got in someone's car, would you not put on a seatbelt simply because they gave you a heartfelt promise that they weren't going to get into an accident that day?

However! A lie is a lie, and it's tacky and low. It's the fact that this lad is lying at all that makes him a dork, regardless of what lie he's telling. Liars should have their tongues cut out and stapled to their ( ... )
