Doctor in the TViX

Jan 26, 2009 10:28

On the 16th September last year, I bought a TViX 4100 Media Player to replace the PC under the TV.
It might have been a mistake. It's got the advantage of being purely solid state (pulling the content from the network), and not requiring a Media Player PC anywhere in the house. That might have been where the mistake was, since I promptly bought a Thecus 4100+ 4 drive disk unit, and set of one terrabyte disks to go into it. It turns out that this is supposed to be capable of being a Media Player server, so I didn't need the TViX, but could have bought something much cheaper (say, 70 quid).

But anyway. It is bought, and it works. Having spent a little time poking around when I got it, I located dvdbackup, the free Linux program for making a direct backup of DVD to a hard drive. So, since then, I've been steadily "backing up" my DVDs. Which, in some cases, is a distinctly good thing, because some of them are quite badly scratched.

I've now finished the task:

tommy@zenith:~$ df --si /mnt/video
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
thecus:/raid/Video 4.0T 2.6T 1.4T 66% /mnt/video

Cor. I've still got 1.4 terrabytes of space to go :)

I spent too much of the weekend watching Lost, old episodes of Lost for the continuity point, season 3 of the US version of the Office, and the first half of the original version of The Day The Earth Stood still.

But the pride of the collection is:

Yup, that's all the (classic) Doctor Who that's been released on DVD, nicely organised on my hard drive. And those collections which include out of sequence stories (the Davros box set, and Beneath the Surface, I'm looking at you). Oh. Damn. The E-space trilogy came out today. Oh well ;-)

Now I can box them all up, and recover the storage space. Not that I've got anywhere to put the box, at the moment...
