I've been running postfix as my home mail server for the last several years, and prefer to have that configured as the mail server on my phone. In my case, I followed the VPN setup instructions, skipped the Router instructions (and then had to come back to them, to check which port I had to open!), as I'm already registered with a dynamic DNS service, so I can easily find my home machine from outside, and then went straight to the Android setup. Which is really, pretty trivial!
