Slouched down in her seat in one of the Talon's quiet corners, Chloe couldn't help but feel like there had to be more to life than this. Bent over some textbook to study for a class she would most likely fail because her teacher found her to be too opinionated for his liking, not having slept for more than five hours each night for the past week just so she could get the next issue of the Torch finished before the weekend, and too hyped up on caffeine that the few friends she had had taken to completely avoiding her.

This couldn't be all there was, could it? Because despite of how she never complained, all of it was rather depressing in a monotonous kind of way.

Risking a glance at the counter, she watched as Lana busied herself with one of the coffee machines, probably trying to fix the thing. Not that Lana was all that technical, so chances were she'd probably end up damaging it more than before. The blonde could practically estimate how long it would take for the other girl to give up and pick up the phone to call Clark for help. And of course, said boy would waste no time in getting himself to the coffee shop even though he had blown off studying that evening with Chloe, claiming he had chores.

She sighed.

Just as usual.

She supposed she wasn't entirely free of blame, seeing as most of her current situation was, in a way, her own choice. She could've just kept quiet when her English teacher gave them such a completely inaccurate description of the relation between Emma and Knightley, or given up some of her duties at the Torch so she could finally have a good night's rest, but neither seemed like options in her mind. And when you really thought about it, one could also point out that a person chooses their own friends and perhaps she should've been a bit pickier to begin with.

She wasn't one to give up on people, though, and to be honest, she wasn't really a saint herself. She couldn't expect her friends to be perfect when she wasn't, but still, it didn't stop their ignorance towards her feelings from hurting any less.

Chloe shook her head lightly to get those thoughts out of her head and focus once more on the textbook, but the words just seemed to blur together after a few seconds. She really needed another coffee if she wanted to keep from falling asleep on the tabletop, and would've ordered one if the waitress hadn't refused her after the first four mocha lattes. Apparently, Lana had put a restriction on her daily intake of coffee at the Talon, arguing it couldn't be good for one's body to digest so much caffeine. Shows what she knows.

Three, two, one and....

There he was, right on time. She watched as Clark walked in and immediately zeroed in on the brunette behind the counter. Oh yes, everything for Lana. It used to make her heart constrict to see him so blatantly fussing over the other girl, but now it just twinges a bit. Nothing much, but still enough to remind her that she will probably never really be as lucky in life as Lana Lang. She just wasn't the kind of girl that boys noticed, which would explain her lousy track record in dating. Maybe she was just doomed to pine after boys that just weren't interested in her.

Now, that was a depressing thought.

Her normally positive outlook on life had faded lately, and it seemed that all she was left with were unhappy musings. Yes, the future had never looked so bleak. Even her reporting skills appeared to be waning a little.

She'd been trying to find out more about a string of disappearances happening near the Burnham Woods, at the edge of Smallville, but so far, nothing had come up. Normally she'd be the first one on the story and finding clues all over the place, but not this time. No, she might have actually lost her touch. Maybe it was the stress. Possibly. Hopefully.

The strange disappearings had some effect on the town, too. People became more cautious and stayed indoors, something Chloe wasn't used to seeing as most usually just ignored the weird and whacky that went on in their town. Even for a Thursday night, the Talon was especially quiet. The only customers were herself, a few girls she faintly recognized from school hanging out near the entrance, an older man who kept giving the loud kids annoyed looks over his shoulder, and some college guy that seemed totally absorbed in whatever was on the screen of the laptop in front of him.

At least, she assumed him to be a college student. He certainly looked the part, with his run down sneakers and shaggy, dark hair. Reminded her a bit of Clark, actually. Tall, broad and most definitely good looking. She'd seen him there before in the last week and absently wondered if he was perhaps in town because of the disappearings, but that seemed a bit farfetched. Not everybody was as fascinated by strange events as her. He was probably just there visiting a relative or something.

This time a yawn overtook her, and she dropped the book to raise one hand to her mouth and stretch at the same time. God, she was exhausted. A tiny moan escaped her as something in her back popped loudly in protest to her sudden movement and she tried to work out the kinks in her neck as well.

It seemed the guy had somehow heard her and was giving her this knowing look from across the room, like he felt the exact same way. And yes, as if on cue, his hand flew up to cover a yawn of his own.

She chuckled at him before picking up her textbook again, not at all interested in what she was supposed to be studying. She could feel the guy still looking her way and even through her dazed mind, she had enough sense to keep her head down. He was probably just thinking how awful she looked, because she sure as hell felt like shit. She just couldn't get a break, could she? Not that he'd be interested anyway. Cute guys like that only paid attention to girls like Lana.

Still, she couldn't help herself and risked a peek at him. Oh, he'd been staring alright and seeing that he'd been caught, he sent her a sheepish half-smile that made him look all the more cute.

Figuring out he might actually be flirting with her, Chloe felt a bit stunned. Huh. Imagine that. Maybe he was another meteor freak. She didn't think so, but she'd been wrong before.

Suddenly the doors swung open to reveal the person that had been haunting her dreams for the last few days and it unconsciously made her straighten in her seat. Even the girls in the corner turned around to stare at the newcomer and honestly, nobody could blame them.

The guy seemed to notice all the attention and flashed the girls a grin before striding into the Talon to sit down next to the college guy. From what Chloe had figured out so far, the two seemed to be brothers and damn, that must make for one pretty family photo each Christmas.

Whereas the shaggy one, who was obviously the youngest of the pair, was cute in a good-natured kind of way, the other guy was just mindblowingly hot. Shorter than his brother but still a good six foot one, he looked wonderfully rugged in his faded jeans, worn leather jacket, and with a faint trace of stubble along his strong jawline. The thing about him that really managed to get her were the eyes, though. Chloe felt like swooning even by looking at them across the room, and she wasn't the swooning type. Those beautiful, bright blue eyes...

No. Bad Chloe. Bad Chloe thinking very naughty thoughts.

The brothers exchanged some words, none of which she could quite make out, but as soon as she was tempted to lean just the little bit forward to catch some of their conversation, both suddenly looked up and straight at her. A blush immediately crept onto her cheeks, now having been caught staring herself. They didn't seem to mind, though.

She watched as a lazy smile slowly crept onto the elder's face and he winked at her, making her blush deepen. Oh god, now there was most definitely flirting going on, and she couldn't say she disliked it. Quite the opposite, actually.

Ever since she first laid eyes on the pair there a week ago, they'd been shooting her looks and she'd been returning them. They were very probably also the reason why she was spending just a little more time at the Talon than usual. It had become the best part of her day, just waiting for one of the brothers to walk in there for a quick coffee or a bite to eat.

At first she'd written their flirtatious behaviour off as boredom on their parts, but soon she'd realized that they seemed to seek her out with their eyes every time they were here. It caused this nice, tingly feeling in her stomach that possibly could be mistaken for butterflies, but couldn't possibly be.

She didn't just fall for any boy she met, and boys didn't fall for her.

But these weren't boys. And as the gorgeous one of the pair continued to blatantly stare at her with a look in his eyes that was anything but innocent, ignoring his brother who was kicking him under the table in annoyance, Chloe had to concede to something.

She preferred men over boys any day.
