♛ CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Aang
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Ability: Aang, ever since he was eight years old, has had the ability to control air and bend it to his will (thus adopting the term Air Bending from the monks he lives with). He easily gained complete mastery over that element without the aid of tutors outside of the monks (for example, he can create spheres of air that he can ride on or use the wind to give him the power of flight in conjunction with his pole-glider). However, it was later discovered that he could also somewhat control other elements (namely Water, Earth and Fire), thus that is the reason why he attends Estrasia Academy. He is currently developing his skills to manipulate Water.

During a very powerful emotional outburst, Aang will lose his consciousness completely and only focus on what he believes is the most important thing at the moment. When this happens, his eyes and tattoos begin to glow bright blue and his powers become powerful to the point where it can be labelled as cataclysmic. Earthquakes large enough to tear the earth, tidal waves strong enough to demolish cities, tornados capable of colliding massive objects with one another, massive fires with enough intensity to melt tempered steel. This state of Aang’s cannot last longer than ninety seconds, but the power Aang is capable of in this state is terrifying. Thankfully it is also extremely rare due to his peaceful nature. Another purpose of training him at Estrasia is to help him gain full control over this state as to keep from endangering the populous, though it is a state Aang would rather avoid being in at all costs.

Aang also has telepathic abilities, able to communicate with nature simply by placing his hand against the ground or on the skin of an animal or even another human being. For simple communication he is proficient, easily able to sense the intent of another person through a simple touch and even read their thoughts, along with sending his own aura into someone to help them calm down when needed. The monks have researched this ability and it is thought to be related to the long-forgotten power of Energy Bending, a dangerous power that can allow him to change the wills or even remove powers of others. This power was also said to be extremely dangerous to the user however, for the user is said to require an unbendable and unbreakable will. Otherwise, they run the risk of their will becoming corrupted and even risk death in the process of bending another’s will. Thus is the reason why it has been forgotten for so long and why Aang will likely never know just how far his telepathic ability can extend.

Although it is not a power, Aang is also acrobatic and agile. He is able to flip through the air easily even without the aid of his bending and can run at a fairly fast speed (though NOT super-powered, TYVM). He was also trained to be a disciplined martial artist (seeming to be most proficient with Aikido and Baguazhang), though it is noted that he usually works best with a pole-type weapon. He loves being active and playing sports that require a lot of movement, so if you’re looking for someone for the sports teams (or as a dance partner as he seems to know many interesting dance moves)... He’s your guy.

History: When Aang was born, he was given to the monks living outside of Moonflow, the temple he lived in often shrouded in darkness and only having one month a year that was filled with sunlight. Although technically raised by all of the monks, the one Aang found himself most attached to was Monk Gyatso. Gyatso was like a father to Aang, the two near-inseperable during Aang’s time at the temple. When Aang’s powers blossomed at a young age, Gyatso was the person who trained Aang in all the ways he knew how, disciplining Aang in Aikido and Baguazhang as forms to use with his powers. In this time he bonded with one of the creatures of the region, a sky bison that he named Appa. Ever since he was six, Aang bonded with Appa and since then they’ve been what can be described as life-long friends. With Appa at his side he continued to learn how to control his power under the tutelage of monk Gyatso. Because of this teaching, Aang earned the tattoos the monks wore when they reached mastery over their strengths when he was only eight years old.

Despite the intense training, Aang and Gyatso also spent a lot of recreational time together, playing games and having fun in order to balance the hard work Aang was put through. Despite the urging for Aang to train more and grow stronger from the other monks, Gyatso’s stubborn insistence that Aang grow up as any other child would prevailed and, until Aang was nine, he continued to live happily with Gyatso at the temple. But, something happened. One night, he heard Gyatso fighting with the other monks about Aang’s abilities, and whether or not he should stay at the temple or be sent away to the floating island to train further to hone his powers.

The thought of losing Gyatso was too much to bear. Gyatso was getting older, and Aang knew the time he’d have left with Gyatso was short. He didn’t want to spend a moment away from Gyatso. He didn’t even want to entertain the thought. He wanted to stay with Gyatso forever.

Something triggered in Aang that night. The more he thought about the separation from Gyatso, the more he couldn’t stand the idea of parting with him. He felt great sadness before that sadness turned to anger, then pure rage. They were trying to push him away from Gyatso. He blacked out while being torn apart by the anguish of that thought, and during that blackout was when Gyatso arrived at Aang’s door to talk to him.

Nearly three years ago, there was a severe hurricane that had vicious winds like no other. Just barely it passed over the eternal night of Moonflow, even if the edge of the violent storm could be seen from the city’s center. But the temple miles away, having barely had any contact with the outside world, was caught in the devastating destruction and was utterly eradicated. When Aang awoke, he saw ruins before his eyes, the tattered clothes of the monks, Gyatso’s beads among them. The shock he felt was great as he gingerly picked up the beads, half-buried in the earth as it rained. Through the now deadened landscape, he couldn’t find anyone. Everyone was gone. He never saw any of the monks again and, after three days of seeing just what kind of damage was done, assumed the worst; he had ended their lives. It was his fault. The monks were right, that he had to learn to control his power, and it was only now that Aang understood why; if he didn’t, the lives of everyone around him would be in jeopardy.

Appa was found alive and well on the fourth day, much to the relief of Aang. With only the clothes on his back, a meagre supply of food and his staff, Aang and Appa looked sadly upon the ruins of the temple and, after giving proper farewells to the deceased, left. He wanted to learn how to control the power that controlled him, that used him to hurt everyone he cared about, and that he feared more than anything in the world. It didn’t seem that the doors of Estrasia would open for him though, saying that he would have to wait until he was at least eleven years old. With a glance at Appa, Aang said he understood and that he would come back then. With nowhere to go and nothing to do, it was then that Aang began to fulfil a more selfish desire to travel the world.

And travel he did, spanning the continents while flying on the back of Appa and meeting all sorts of people. He made lots of new friends, friends that helped lessen the pain his heart felt and helped him feel happiness again. He even met with other Estrasia students in different parts, the first being Mai.

Mai wasn’t a friendly person at first, but Aang persisted in his chance encounter with him and successfully managed to get her to go Komodo Race with him. It was something he had to drag Mai temporarily out of Aglis for, but it was worth the trip for him; not only did he get to do a Komodo Race, but he got to make a new friend. He promised her that he’d meet her in Estrasia Academy some day, and with that farewell Aang continued on his trip around the world.

Upon reaching the city of Armlock in his travels, he met as boy who, as it turned out, also hailed from Aglis. This boy was Zuko, and like Aang he was also traveling. Aang thought that was interesting and decided to follow Zuko around for a while, and although things were tense at first the two became friends. In fact, throughout all of his travels, he became the closest with Zuko even if he didn’t realize it at the time. The two found out that they would both be heading for Estrasia Academy at some point, and the prospect excited Aang even more; More friends at the school, oh how he couldn’t wait to turn eleven! Another farewell left Aang wanting to go to the school even more, but once again he took off on Appa to continue his travels across the continents.

The day when he turned eleven years old finally arrived and the letter formally inviting him to Estrasia Academy was picked up in Moonflow shortly after. Immediately Aang set off for the academy, studying there for a year. During this time he met a girl from Bevelle, one of the cities he didn’t have a chance to visit, and it was that girl he had (and still has) his first crush on. Katara of Bevelle, a girl from the north who could manipulate water, just like him! Well, actually, she was more skilled than him, but maybe that was part of what attracted him to her. The two became fast friends, Aang meeting Sokka sometime later and finding that he had found even closer friends here at the school. He even saw Mai around on occasion, although he had to wonder just how long Zuko would travel before coming to the academy like he said he would. Aang left for a week between one year’s semester and the next’s before he once more rode in on Appa to arrive at the academy, re-uniting with his friends (and celebrating Sokka finally coming to the academy after having discovered a power all his own) and, much to his delight, finding that Zuko had kept his promise. Now he lives in the Estrasia dorms, working hard and playing harder with the friends he’s made over the years. It was a fresh start for Aang, even if he never let himself forget his past and why he was at the academy in the first place...

Even so, it was a great feeling just to be with people he loved and who loved him again.
Personality: Aang, having been raised by monks, seems to have an almost classic monk mentality; he is peaceful, carefree, non-materialistic, unusually wise for his age and generally seen as content with life. He shows a strong dislike for violence, often trying to resolve situations around him peacefully using the teachings the monks passed down to him and his own abilities. He also believes that every single life in existence is sacred and as such will do anything to protect it, being a vegetarian and sparing the lives of even the smallest bugs. At first glance, one might think Aang is forever destined to be a peaceful monk who spreads advice, wisdom and love.

But when Aang relaxes, he knows how to do it in style. Physically he’s active and loves to play games to stimulate your mind, sports that range from every-day to extreme and unheard of, and interact with almost any region’s wildlife. This has led to a desire to travel and soar free like the wind in the sky (which isn’t surprising, considering the element he’s most easily affiliated with). Through this he seems to have gained a fondness for being the center of attention, but as long as he has someone to drag him back down to Earth he won’t get too reckless. At least not after that first time...

Aang’s major goals in life are to ride every type of animal that can be ridden at least once and to make friends with people from every single town he can find all over the world. And after seeing people from all over the world, he’s found that there are good and bad people everywhere, no matter where you look, and you shouldn’t simply judge just by looking at someone. It was another of the monks’ teachings, but it was also something he had to see for himself in order to truly learn it. Sometimes it’s a bit too easy to trick Aang however as he is also slightly naïve in nature, but because of this he easily accepts everyone he meets as a possible new friend and jumps at the opportunity enthusiastically. Because of past events he can also be seen as a bit clingy to his friends, wanting to hang out with at least one of them nearly every second of the day. If one was to call him on it he wouldn’t give a definitive answer, but the true reason is hidden within his history.

Occasionally he’s known to slack off during his training, despite being naturally adept at it (for the most part). It’s not because of the dislike of learning, but rather what he fears might happen if he does in fact master his power and if he grows stronger. What would it be used for? How would it be used? Fears and worries that violent acts might occur because of him, that he might slip into his other self if he is particularly enraged, terror at knowing the terrible power he wields and knowing just how badly it can hurt the people around him. He almost doesn’t want to master his power so he can’t possibly hurt those people anymore, or anyone for that matter. But especially not his friends.

Through the near-constantly smiling exterior, Aang also feels heavy burdens when he feels like he’s failed the monks or his friends. He never truly lets himself forget his actions of the past, but it also seems like he has a lot of trouble forgiving himself when that sort of thing happens. Even if his friends tell him it’s okay and that they forgive him, Aang still has a lot of trouble getting over the fact that he was the one responsible for causing his friends pain or grief. As someone who is supposed to feel detached from the world, feeling responsible for his actions affecting someone else is something almost entirely new to him and something he’s still getting used to. But he knows that he can always count on those very friends, and all he ever hopes to do is make sure that they can always rely on him as well.

In more serious situations (or simply when Aang is frustrated or scared) Aang is prone to temperamental outbursts, snapping at the people he cares about and yelling at them while stating his opinion on matters. It is a more childish aspect of him that he has not yet over-come, the feelings of jealousy or anger towards others. Sometimes he even overreacts and says extremely hurtful things without meaning to, but once he comes to his senses and has time to think, he’ll see that he’s been out of line and apologize for his actions and words. However, with this temperament it is shown that Aang can also be rash when it comes to his decisions, not taking the time to think things through when he’s in a clouded state of mind. That, undoubtedly, is when he’ll need people to help him think about what he’s doing the most.

♜ SAMPLES
Third Person Sample: Rain pelted hard and cold against the island of Estrasia, and in the middle of the grassy green field outside of the main entrance Aang and Appa sat, looking at the gray clouds above and around them. It was simple rain, that was all it was, but on this day it meant so much more to both of them. After a while Appa let out a rather loud howl, a sound sad and lonely enough to prompt Aang to pat the enormous creature’s leg.

“Yeah... I miss them too.”

It had been three years since it happened, three years since he lost everything he had. The monks, the temple, Gyatso... All of them were gone. He couldn’t remember a single thing of that night, but he could remember the cold, dreaded realization that came over him three days after. He was the sole cause of his loss, because he lost control of his emotions and, consequently, his powers. Jade eyes saw that Appa closed his big brown ones, Aang continuing to pat Appa while his gaze returned to the clouds and rain. It was cold, but he knew he wouldn’t get sick. He could dry off easily, and he could dry off Appa easily too. But, sitting here like this reminded him. He didn’t want to forget. But... He could never really forgive himself for it either.

“It’s never going to happen again,” Aang murmured to himself, bowing his head and allowing his eyes to slide to a close. He felt warm, wet fur push against him as a sign that Appa had heard and understood him, a sign of comfort that Aang appreciated. Lithe arms were thrown around Appa, hugging the other tightly as Aang continued to whisper, “It won’t. I’ll get stronger and make sure I never do anything like that again. I’ll protect everyone. I promise.”

Aang didn’t even know if he was going to be able to keep that promise or not. But if it meant that he was going to lose everything again if he didn’t... He would do everything it took to make sure he never broke it. He just knew that he wouldn’t be able to take going through it again.

First Person Sample: Hey everyone! I’m back! Yip yip!

[The familiar shouting of the energetic boy rings through the air before Appa descends upon the floating island of Estrasia, Aang smiling wider at the noise Appa makes. He easily flips in the air as he hops off of the bison’s back, waving at the people who caught his eye regardless of if they paid attention to him or not. The people he’s looking forward to seeing the most aren’t there yet, and that makes Aang simply sigh before he flops back onto the ground beside the large animal, smiling up at the sky.]

It’s good to be back, huh buddy? Traveling is good at all, but I like it here. This is where a lot of our friends are, right?

[He laughs a little at the noise Appa makes in response, watching as the bison falls asleep before he jumps back to his feet and looks around. It doesn’t look like much has changed in the area, and he has to admit to himself that the familiarity is pretty nice. He’ll have to find the right place for Appa to go after a while, but he knows that everyone will want to see Appa as well as him. So maybe he’ll just wait around here a bit longer before he goes to put Appa away and gets back to his room.

It’s totally not an excuse to just relax and be a little lazy, why do you ask?]
