Lilah glanced around as she strode through the parking garage, her heels clicking on the concrete. Dusk had fallen, and perhaps she should have requested that one of the security guards accompany her to her car, but that wasn't really her style. She tightened her grip on her briefcase and began digging in the pocket of her jacket for her keys.

Well. Lilah Morgan. Just the person he'd wanted to see. Intimidating Christian Ryan could prove more difficult than he was prepared to deal with. Lilah's shown a past propensity for intimidation to be a perfectly workable strategy, after all.

He stepped out from behind the concrete column he'd used to obscure himself from sight, and advanced quickly and quietly, withdrawing his pistol from his coat pocket. He'd chosen a smaller model, a .22 he could easily conceal in the palm of his hand. The lighting in this area of the garage wouldn't give him away until he was right on top of her...

He thumbed back the hammer when within two steps of her, letting her hear the click. One hand lashed out, gripping the back of her neck, hard enough to bruise.

"I thought perhaps we should talk, you and I."

Lilah's heart hammered in her throat, but her first instinct was to go for irritation. Surely the man didn't plan to shoot her in the Wolfram and Hart parking garage, after all?

"Good God, Wesley, put that thing away. And let go of me." She turned her head to glare at him, holding her body stiff and straight. She swallowed. "This is an unorthodox method of conversation, don't you think?" she snapped.

"Lilah," he said, keeping his voice carefully soft, and devoid of tonal inflection, "My best friend, a man I've had my own personal funeral for, is walking around inside your building, an employee of your firm. You are going to supply me with answers. The alternative is, I am going to put a .22 bullet into your spine. Do you doubt for a moment that I'm capable of shooting you in the back?"

She glared at him, putting all the venom into it that a female barricuda of a lawyer could summon. "The only things that are certain are death and taxes, Wesley," she bit out from between gritted teeth. She squirmed futilely once more.

"The Partners are responsible for the resurrection of your friend. They sent Christian Ryan to Austria to retrieve the necessary artifact." Perhaps that would satisfy him. It was worth a try, anyway.

Through clenched teeth, Lilah gritted out the name of the object. It's not going to matter, she thought. They're going to kill him anyway. "Would you like me to spell that for you?" she sniped. She twisted in his grasp again. "That's all I know about it. Now let me out of here, immediately."

She wondered how the head of W & H security would like a stiletto heel in a most unseemly place. That could definitely be arranged.
