Kiseop tried to surpress the shiver as he stripped down and discarded his clothes on the beach. He asked himself how he could be so stupid to make a bet with Soohyun, especially since Soohyun was way fitter than him. He scowled, the cold moving into his body and freezing his bones. Hopping around he tried to get himself a little warmer.
He look at the sea in front of him, a layer of mist hovering on top of it, covering the sun. When he looked at the the sky, all he saw were dark clouds. It seemed like everything was warning him to stay away, to just go back and admit his defeat. He glared at the sky when he felt raindrops on his head.
Hearing a chuckle from beside him, he turned his head. There stood Soohyun, bare-chested, pulling his pants down. He was laughing at Kiseop, shaking his head in amusement.
Kiseop scowled once more, planting his feet firmly in the sand.
“You know the rules right?” Soohyun asked.
Kiseop nodded, repeating them in his head. Run to the water, swim to the red pole, then swim back. The first one to touch the rock will be the winner, thus claimed as the fittest.
“On three...” Soohyun began.
“One...”
“Two...”
Soohyun and Kiseop both started running, trying to cheat with the same trick. While pulling and pushing they reached the water. Soohyun tripped Kiseop, sending him face-first into the sea. Kiseop grumbled and quickly got up, just fast enough to catch up with Soohyun. The boys were now swimming side by side.
Kiseop felt the cold water tugging at him, trying to lure him into the darkness beneath him. He tried to focus on swimming - he had to win this.
“Why can't you just admit to be weaker, just once?” Kiseop got out through his clattering teeth.
Soohyun let out a breathless laugh. “Because I'm not weaker. And you are.”
“I'm not weaker.” Kiseop coughed, almost choking on a gulp a water. “I just lose because...”
“Because?”
“Because....because I don't want you to feel weak.”
Soohyun didn't respond, just pushing himself harder, trying to get more distance between them. He got into the lead - but not for long, because Kiseop suddenly swam past him.
It started raining even harder, making this whole competition even more difficult.
Kiseop couldn't remember the red pole being that far away and with every movement he made, it seemed as if the pole moved farther. He almost gave up hope, until the pole finally seemed to get bigger.
When he looked up after a while, he saw the pole was right in front of him. He grabbed it, looking back to see Soohyun a couple of meters behind him. He rested until had almost reached him, then he started his journey back to the shore.
He didn't look back anymore, he didn't think except for the fact that he was going to win this. Before he knew it he had reached the shore. His feet hit the ground and he struggled to get out of the water. Stumbling, he fell to his feet next to their clothes. The last thing he saw was Soohyun falling down beside him, then everything went black.
“Kiseop? Kiseop, wake up. Come on, return to earth...Kiseop!”
He felt someone softly slapping his face, then his shoulders were shaken and hands were on his chest. He slowly opened one eye, blinking a few times before fully opening them.
“Hi.” Soohyun smiled brightly at him. “Glad to see you're alive.”
Kiseop coughed in answer, his throat raw from all the water he gulped down. Soohyun helped him get up. Kiseop leaned heavily against him when his legs gave out. When Soohyun was sure the younger boy could stand on his own again, he ruffled Kiseop's hair and took a step back.
“So...you won.” Soohyun said.
Kiseop gave him a small smile. “I guess I did.”
“But actually you lost.”
Kiseop shot Soohyun a confused look.
“We agreed that the winner would be the first to touch that rock, but you never touched it, since you passed out once you reached the beach.”
“What? But I got here first! This is just one of your stupid excuses to make sure you can win and -”
“Rules are rules, 'seop. You said that many times.”
Kiseop scoffed, kicking the sand. Suddenly he remembered something. “I remember you laying down next to me right before I passed out. Which means...you haven't touched the rock either!”
Soohyun gave him a blank look. “I - oh.”
They locked eyes before they both sprinted towards the rock. Soohyun tried to trip Kiseop once again, but Kiseop saw it coming. He jumped to the side and sprinted past Soohyun. Reaching the rock first he triumphantly sat down on it.
“Oh, who is the winner now?”
Soohyun just shook his head, sitting down beside Kiseop. “Alright, you won.”
“Ah, yes I did.”
“But you still lost the thirty other competitions.” Soohyun smirked at the gasp he got in answer. Throwing an arm around Kiseop's shoulder, Soohyun pulled him closer. “That doesn't mean I like you less though.”
Kiseop snorted. “But I do like you less because of it.”
“Hey!”
“Don't worry, I'll just have to win twenty-nine times and we're even. I think I'll be able to like you again after that.”
“You're so childish.”
“Says the sore loser.”
“I'm not a sore loser!”
“You are.”
“Am not.”
“Don't even try to deny it, Shin Soohyun.”
“I will, because it's not true.”
“Just dream on.”
Soohyun kissed Kiseop on the lips. When Kiseop didn't say anything for a while, Soohyun laughed.
“I knew you still liked me.”
