When you were just the dreamWhen Zitao is awake, he is an ordinary student struggling along at Qingdao University. He is majoring in education, though his friends agree that the only thing he'd be qualified to teach anyone is wushu. "And even that," they tease, "you're only good at doing." This is mostly true, so Tao has recently considered switching to medicine, so he can be like those sages he read about when he was younger, dealing in herbal remedies and pressure point massages. All of this, though, is just idle dreaming. And dreaming is part of the reason he is struggling

Zitao's dreams skip along a timeline. Each snatch of dream is like walking back into a movie that keeps playing while he's away. His dream body knows dance routines and songs that his waking mind doesn't. He learns how to say skinship, appreciation, synchronized, in Korean. He slips into concerts, dance practices, vacations. Photoshoots, where his bandmates tickle his stomach and pull on his clothes. Kris making him instant noodles in the kitchen, humming off-key while sucking on a chopstick, face plastered in a clay mask. Zitao furtively buys himself a clay mask one weekend and tries it on. It comes out tacky, thick, a grey smear across his cheeks and forehead. When he looks in the mirror, he half expects to see Tao looking back at him. He's disappointed when the door opens and it's just his roommate, who snorts, "What the hell are you doing

asdjflkjalghlgdskjfl;s this is amazing!! I loved the parts about REM sleep and the parts about Kris's fingers and the parts about clay masks and the parts about EDS and the parts about Chinese herbal remedies, and I LOVED ALL THE PARTS; thanks so much for writing this!
Kris goes into the game with only one motivation: to die in the least embarrassing way possible.
"Is that what a duizhang should do?" Junmyeon asks him as they both wait to start the program. His little concerned frown makes Kris smile. Junmyeon's concept was always 'leader'; his stage name is Suho, after all. In some ways, Kris is lucky. his concept's more about dedication -- dedication from him, dedication for him.
"In Battle Hallyu," Kris tells him, a hand on Junmyeon's back, "there are no duizhangs."
Junmyeon was his first kill -- pinned to a tree with Kris' machete, the touch of Kris' hand still warm on his cheek. After that Kris' popularity takes a dip, then rises immediately. That was the point of Battle Hallyu, after all. The strongest get to survive.

In his last waking moments, Kris thinks of what will happen. Tao telling Baekhyun the truth. Baekhyun's knife work, slick and fast. How tenderly Baekhyun will touch Tao's face as Tao dies. Baekhyun's anger, slick and fast, working through him in a blind rage. Chanyeol hunting for the dead, hunting for death. Kris wonders what they will do, without him to watch over them, without him playing father and older brother and owner, lording over their affections like a hoarder with an endless appetite. What Chanyeol will say when he finds Baekhyun, fingers still pink from Tao's blood

EXO gets six years, five minis, two studio albums, one Japanese album ironically named simply "ONE", one and a half lukewarm reunion tours, one goodbye concert, and then the slow, steady burnout of a monstrous machine with too many moving parts to really die. From the mess of the last days, Sehun remembers: the fans buying them each cakes with fondant models of themselves, which Kyungsoo tries to eat and accidentally spits all over Baekhyun; Jongin and Yixing crying during their final performance of "Two Moons"; Kris carrying Junmyeon bridal-style across the stage in awkward, stupefied silence during their final private party with fans; Chanyeol almost breaking his back the one and final time they actually let Tao teach wushu during an interview and him muttering under his breath so the mics wouldn't pick it up, "not that it would matter now"; the smell of the samgyeopsal smoke in Minseok's thin hair during their last team dinner; Jongdae bowing so low to his fanclub that he's dizzy when he

Sehun has opportunities. In an interview after his first drama role, Junmyeon was asked if he missed being in EXO-K. "Every day," he'd said, and even reading the inchoate text Sehun could imagine how Junmyeon delivered it: eyes wet and pleading, mouth torn between a frown and a smile, so earnest it felt like a lie. "But to me it's not a sad thing," Junmyeon had continued. "It's a happy foundation that will always be there in me, in my heart, and I build on it."
It used to be that houses were built on dirt trampled until it was firm and even. Six years is a lot of trampling; millions of fans is a lot of trampling; twelve people is a lot of trampling. Sehun's foundation is flat and firm. He could start building, any day. But sometimes he dreams that he is the dirt, or that he's trapped under it. That someone -- Lu Han -- is walking over, away, past him, and no matter how loud he calls out, he can't be heard. Turn back was one of the first lines Sehun had learned as part of EXO. This should mean something, but Sehun doesn't know what

Lay/Lu Han, Mamihlapinatapei (Yagan, an indigenous language of Tierra del Fuego): The wordless yet meaningful look shared by two people who desire to initiate something, but are both reluctant to start.
First you say something like let's stop sleeping together. This lasts about a week before you corner Lu Han around the corner from the practice room where he's been learning the dance moves from the Beijing showcase, and his bangs are wet, as if exhaustion is a kind of rain that only falls on him, and you kiss him hard, all lips, no mouth, and he grabs onto you, fingers strong and hot. It's nothing like the lush kisses you used to share in the dorm rooms with the lights on, and it feels like having an affair with someone who happens to look just like him. Your heart swells with the thought. You don't have enough room in your life for the loves you already have. You can't afford another one.
If you could sum up your life in one question, it would be, what if I could have everything I want? Satisfaction is a disease that grows until it consumes everything. Nothing living can stand in its way for long. You spread him out on the bed, you taste him like a spark on your tongue, and you open him up

Eventually one of you will say something like no one has to be left out and it will be as if you both speak it at the same time, sharing the same exhalation, like the complicated, coordinated machinery that move oxygen from lung to heart to mouth. Only this is not a memory -- you never have this conversation with Lu Han. With the two of them, you could have two halves or one whole, and you know what you pick. Cowards, after all, do everything in half-measures

and the memory of Lu Han's mouth against your hand is a wall you build up, pound your knuckles against, then destroy. Very strong imagery. My heart, it bleeds ;_____;
He was enough for you then. And neither of you have changed. Only, now, there is Lu Han. I love how you made KrisLay happen before LayHan. Really refreshing :)
You pray every time that the next person you care for will be someone who you can exist without, someone who won't need anything from you to be content. But this is a false dichotomy -- they are both complete without you, just as you are better person with them. OH GOD, THESE LINES. For some reason, I can really imagine him thinking about this, like this.
Lu Han turns to Kris now, wearing your smile and his eyes and says, "We'll never be happy without you." The "wearing your smile" bit just slayed me effortlessly
