I am so sick of supernatural stories! The amount of angst and turmoil and suffering is driving me nuts! I want a book where someone is like "I can do magic, how cool is that?" what would be the conflict (interest) to a story if someone had that kind of power and no qualms about using it?

The only stories like that I can think of is the movie Powder or one of my favorite books "Stranger in a Strange Land." In both cases they end up as martyrs. They don't want to live among people who can't accept them.

I understand that conflict is the driving force behind a good story, and that in the case of having power, one of the biggest sources of conflict is how that power is used and how using it incorrectly can damage a person mentally and emotionally.

I also might be explaining my problem wrong. I suppose what I'm really saying is that when you have that kind of power, being afraid of it is only one of the possible conflicts that can arise. What happens when you have it, and enjoy it and then some comes along and points out, hey you're evil. I want to read/tell a story where the guy goes through his life with all this power, totally corrupted and then realizes he's evil later. I mean, if power is the big corrupter how do you know in advance you're turning evil. Wouldn't it just happen? Think about it, evil people don't really think they're evil.
