It's really tearing me apart. I'm only a couple generations away from my Amish relatives. Those children know no violence. This is utterly alien to them. Public school children are generally at least cognizant of violence in the world, but Amish children at that age are pretty much still sheltered from it.
I also found myself wondering about his kids' genders, and his wife's reaction to the phone call.
So very, very many people were hurt by this (including us, and 10-year-old girls all over the world who will be afraid to go to school tomorrow because they heard about it), because he couldn't find any other way. It's frightening.
Sometimes I wonder what the hell I was thinking, having children, when I cannot protect them, when there's so much horror out there. Today was one of those times.

I think I'm still stunned. My emotional reaction is stuck in my chest somewhere.
I keep wondering what happened to hurt the shooter so badly, and how sick he must have been, too.
