Take for instance Lehigh University Professor Michael Behe, who testified yesterday on behalf of the Dover Area School Board (they're the ones giving students a statement about intelligent design and recommending a book when talking about evolution). I don't know. Just because the theory involves a higher being doesn't necessarily mean that it then becomes a religion. Beleiving something and believing in something are two different concepts, surely? I believe that the guy at the university IT department set up my laptop for me (even though I didn't see him do it; this was just a claim on his part), but I don't believe that he is my saviour. Basically, all higher beings that we are used to from history are the centres of some form of religion. Theoretically (although I don't believe it personally) there could be a new higher being, one of which no-one has ever spoken, that did initiate the construction of the universe.

That said, how would we distinguish it from existing deities? Most probably, if this ever did get proven correct, all religions would claim it to be theirs. Then we'd have all kinds of inter-racial and interreligious arguments starting up.
