How to deal with a flamer?
And I don't mean the fun kind - the over-the-top, flamboyant, cheerful gay guy - I mean the person who writes mean reviews saying 'you suck' on your fanfics.
There's someone who's reviewed Everything Else on FF.Net three times in the past month, under three different anonymous usernames: KurtofskyRules, Glee Is The Best, and KurtofskyIsKing. In all three reviews, two of them being for chapter one and one for chapter five, this person has asked me about (or insulted me for) my portrayal of Azimio.
In chapter one, Azimio slushies Dave and calls him a faggot after finding out that Dave came out to the Glee club and is dating Kurt. In chapter five, Kurt mentions this incident and Dave replies "Pfft. Fuck Azimio. Some best friend he turned out to be."
So this person said on chapter one -
This is a GREAT STORY ... buuuuut ... OMG ... why did you make Azimio-The-Adorable out to be such a complete ass?
He's one of my FAVORITE characters (there's something about his face that reminds me of a gigantic 2 year old =D) - and everyone I know absolutely loves him.
There is JUST NO WAY whatsoever that Azimio would not do everything to support his best friend Dave being gay.
Azimo is the coolest - and he (clearly being the guy-version of Mercedes for crying the heck out loud) always has his best friend's back (and would protect Kurt as well, by default).
Everyone I know who watches Glee looooove Azimio.
If Dave and Kurt became a couple ... it would be only a matter of time before Azimio and Mercedes became one too - once he breaks her up from 'Anthony' (who is clearly the straight-version of Blaine) =D
Anyway ... still looking forward to your updates (and also hoping you will somehow redeem chubby-cheeks Azi Adams). =D
Then once I posted chapter five, they reviewed again on chapter one -
Why did you make Azimio out to be a homophobe in this?
He would NEVER turn on Dave for ANY reason (he's the guy version of 'Cedes)
Also - it bothers me that you pointed out his skin coloring ("the black boy") - for no related reason - BUT did NOT point out anyone else's skin coloring.
That's soooo stupid - and his coloring has nothing to do with the story.
What century are you living in?
And then right after that, on chapter five itself -
OMG - THIS STORY SUCKS !
And I cannot believe you would ever have Dave and Azimio break up as best friends - and over something as stupid as sexual orientation.
The show has never presented Aizmio the way that you have made him out to be - and I find it to be disgusting how you have re-written this character to fit your own issues with people who look like him.
The Aimio that's shown on Glee is always full of laughs (and pranks) AND he always stands by and protects Dave - because they are the best of buds.
BTW - what is your problem with Azimio, anyway?

So. Frankly, I'm quite amused. But also pissed as all fuck. Who the hell is this person telling me how I should or shouldn't portray a certain character in my fanfiction? It's my fucking fanfic, so I'll do whatever I want in it. Every story needs a villain, and I chose Azimio for mine. Fuck, tessisamess and wherethewind chose Blaine to be their villain on kurtofsky_ims, and hardly anyone gave them any trouble over it, myself included.
But that's semantics. The thing is, this person is seriously delusional if they don't realize that Azimio is in fact a homophobe, and that my portrayal of him is pretty accurate. I admit that my opinion towards him changed somewhat after 2x11 when he said he really wanted to be in the championship game for his dad. But in 2x17 and 2x19, Azimio is still a pretty dumb, ignorant, homophobic character - and he's that way on purpose, because that character has to exist. There has to be someone close to Dave who is homophobic and quite verbal about it; otherwise Dave wouldn't be so afraid to maybe come out.
Judging from Azimio's current portrayal on the show, I still don't think he would take Dave's coming out well. True, he's a very fun character for comic relief - but he's hardly a great guy. And he is in no way the male version of Mercedes - I have no idea where this person got that idea! XD
Now. As for my pointing out Azimio's being black - referring to him as 'the black boy' - this doesn't make me racist. I've used 'the black girl/boy' for Mercedes and Anthony respectively; I've used 'the Asian girl/boy' for Tina and Mike; I've used 'the Jewish girl/boy' for Rachel and Puck; I've used 'the Latina girl' for Santana. It's a literary consideration - it gets repetative to use the character's name several times in one paragraph/scene, so sometimes I spice it up by describing the character - I could just as easily say 'the bigger boy' or 'the shorter girl' or even 'the blond girl' - which I do. But it's in no way racist, because I have in no way implied that any of these ethnicities are inferior to others, or that there's anything bad about being of a certain ethnicity. I'm Jewish, for fuck's sake; I know what it's like to be discriminated against and I try not to do it to others.
I'm writing all this here because I do feel the inexplicable need to explain myself and defend myself - but I won't do it at FF.Net; I won't give this flamer the satisfaction. In fact, I've already deleted their reviews - all three of them :)
Also... I wasn't going to spoil this, but I this whole thing has made me realize that lots of people out there like Azimio and hope for his redemption. So I'll just say it briefly: it'll happen. Not any time soon, but I do plan on redeeming him eventually. So if anyone out there is worried (but has not regressed into a 6-year old and told me that I/my fic 'both suck and blow') - you can rest at ease. Azimio will grow up, and Dave will have his best bud back.
