Summary: Geng is an angel with a devil for a soul mate
Geng looked up when he heard someone join him on the rooftop of the dorm. He looked over his shoulder, quickly disguising the wings he'd been born with from whoever his company was.
"You don't have to do that, hyung. I know you have wings," Kibum said.
Geng strained his eyes to see into the dark where Kibum stood in the shadows. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. "People don't have wings, Kibum."
Kibum chuckled as he stepped out of the shadows. Geng boggled at the large, bat-like wings stemming from between his shoulder blades. "I could sense your magic the moment we were introduced. It didn't take long to see past it to see which kinds of wings you have."
Geng's grip on his magic faltered, revealing the large white wings he had growing from his own back. "Why didn't you ever tell me?" he asked. They'd almost gone to bed together and such a move could destroy his standing with the gods he served.
"I assumed you knew, but you must be much younger than I thought if you couldn't sense my magic," Kibum said. He approached and Geng took a step back. "If I wanted to hurt you I would have done so long before now."
"I'm not that young. I have a century and a half already," Geng said. He was off balance, not sure what to do next with the revelation that the man he was quickly falling in love with was a devil and therefore completely forbidden. He stopped backing up, though, and let Kibum come close.
"And I have nearly three centuries," Kibum said. He took one last step closer so that their bodies were close. "Does this revelation really change anything?"
"Of course it does!" Geng protested. "I'm an angel. I can't be with a devil. I'll be kicked out forever."
Kibum's hands slid his hands over Geng's shoulders and onto his the feathered wings. "Even after everything we've been through? You can't claim not to care about me," he said.
Geng shivered as he leaned almost instinctively into Kibum's body, his own hands coming up to feel Kibum's wings, surprised that they were actually very soft. When Kibum kissed him Geng leaned into the touch. Somehow, it made more sense that Kibum was twice his age. He'd always been more mature and stable than Geng, after all.
Abruptly, Geng pulled away and folded his arms around his chest. "Kibum, I can't do this. I'll get in trouble if we do anything."
"We've kissed before, Geng. I'm sure they know that I'm a devil and they must not be overly worried if they haven't told you," Kibum replied.
Geng wanted to argue, wanted to say there was no way the gods knew about Kibum, that they wouldn't let him fall from grace like that with no warning. "They must know that I wasn't going to sleep with you," he said. Still, he would have to go and see his guiding god soon to discuss the problem with Kibum now that he knew of his true identity. "I can't be with you, Kibum. I can't fall from grace."
Kibum's only response was to kiss Geng again, pulling him close and holding him tight so that it would be difficult for Geng to get away. Geng bowed his head to break the kiss. "Geng, nothing changed."
"Everything changed," Geng said. He pulled back and Kibum let him go. "I need to go." And with that he took off into the air, already saying the spell that would open the portal between the human realm and the realm of the gods.
Geng knelt in front of his guiding god, head bowed as he tried not to show just how upset he was. Surely he shouldn't be upset over being told to cut the devil, Kibum, out of his life. He curled his hands into fists where they rested on his knees. It shouldn't hurt, but it did.
"Geng, you can't see him anymore. You will see him because we're not going to take you from your mission, but you can't be intimate with him anymore. You must keep your distance."
"I understand," Geng said, voice shaking slightly. "Should I go back now?"
"Yes. And focus on your mission. There is still a soul for you to heal."
Geng nodded and wondered who would heal his own soul. He rose, bowed to his guardian god and left his presence. Once he was out of sight he said the spell to take him back to the human realm and a conversation he didn't want to have.
Kibum threw a chair across the rooms he had in the underworld. His personal cat demons had gone running when they saw the foul mood he was in. It was only a matter of time until one of his superiors came to find out what was going on with him. Things were going horribly wrong and he didn't completely understand why.
"Your cat demons said you're behaving badly." The smooth voice of his superior, the one in charge of making sure Kibum caused just enough trouble in the human realm, stopped him from throwing the desk that matched his chair. "What has gotten you in such a fit?"
"I cast the spell to see the red thread. It shouldn't work if you're not in the same place with your match, right?" Kibum asked.
"That's correct. Are you upset that it worked? Most would be happy to know so young."
Kibum's glare was intense, but it did little to his superior. "He's an angel. What the hell am I supposed to do with that?" he demanded.
"I'm aware of who your match is, Kibum. It's part of being your superior." Kibum faltered, thrown off balance to the point that he could really respond. "You will have to figure out what to do. There are options, but you need to find them on your own."
"The only options I see are for us to ignore the match or for him to fall from grace," Kibum retorted. "I don't want to ignore the match and he doesn't want to fall."
"There is a way for it to work. It's happened before."
Kibum's fingers curled around the desk, tempted to throw it at his superior, but knowing it was a stupid idea. "You're not helping my mood." A soft chuckle and his superior left. Kibum picked up the desk and hurled it across the room hard enough to make it shatter. The squeak and hurrying feet outside his door told him his cat demons had tried to return to what was also their rooms a little too early. He would stay in the underworld for the night simply because he could and eventually his cat demons would come back to cheer him up.
Geng stood back as he watched his friends interact. Kyuhyun was doing better, smiling and laughing more than he had in a long time. It helped him to know that his mission was succeeding and that Kyuhyun's soul was slowly healing.
It'd been a long day, made longer by the fact that Kibum seemed to have disappeared. He should have been happy that the pressure was no longer there, but he only worried that something had happened to his now ex-boyfriend. Kibum wasn't exactly expected to be there, not when he wasn’t going to be on any of the songs for the newest album, but Geng would have liked to see him. He was just about to go join the festivities when he heard the summons.
With a quick excuse of going to make a phone call, Geng left the recording studio and found a place he could safely cast the spell that would take him back to the realm of the gods. He stepped into his guardian god's rooms, frowning slightly.
"Is something wrong?" Geng questioned as he bowed deeply.
"I sensed your distress and wanted to check on you. It's not like you to feel so conflicted."
Geng knelt in front of his guardian god. "I don't know why I'm feeling like this. He's a devil. I should be happy I know and can avoid the trouble he'll bring me if I didn't know."
"Did you fall in love with him?"
"I…" Geng glanced up and then down at his hands. "I don't know." He'd thought, maybe, that he was in love, but Kibum was a devil so how could he be in love? He folded his hands in his lap and took several deep breaths. "I can't see him so it doesn't matter."
"You don't believe that, Geng."
"I need to believe it or I'll put myself in danger of falling," Geng replied softly.
"You need to decide what is best for you."
Geng looked up. "How can falling from grace be what is best for me?"
"You wouldn't be the first angel to choose a devil's love over standing in this realm."
Geng's shoulders slumped, more confused than ever over what he should be doing. He rubbed at his ring finger, attempting to ease the ache and itch.
"Think about it Geng, but don't get distracted from your mission."
"I will do my best," Geng promised. He stood, bowed, and went back to his human friends.
Geng closed the door to his room and nearly cried out in surprise. Kibum lounged on his bed, looking for the world like he was exactly where he belonged. He took a step back and hit his bedroom door.
"Scared of me because I'm a devil?" Kibum asked.
"I don't want to fall, Kibum. I couldn't live with that," Geng replied. He wanted nothing more than to be with Kibum, but he couldn't. It would be disastrous for him, but Kibum wouldn't suffer at all. "Please don't keep bothering me."
"You were in love with me until I revealed my devil wings," Kibum said. "Can you really change your feelings?"
Geng sighed as he dropped his head back against his door. "I have to, Kibum. I can't be with a devil." He blinked as a red line appeared around Kibum's ring finger and slowly looped its way to Geng's hand until it settled around his own ring finger. For the first time since he was told not to see Kibum the itch and ache in that finger eased. "But… that can't be possible," he whispered.
Kibum walked over and as he walked the thread shrank in size. "The spell does not lie, Geng. It's the same one that the angels use to discover if they've met their match. I cast it a few nights ago, when we almost slept together," he said.
"It can't be right," Geng insisted. "Angels aren't matched to devils."
"It is right," Kibum replied. He cupped Geng's face in his hands and kissed him lightly on the lips. Geng reached up to push Kibum away, but his hands fisted in Kibum's shirt instead, pulling him closer and kissing him back. Kibum pulled back after a few moments of gentle kissing. "But I don't want you to fall so I'm leaving. You won't see much of me."
Geng started to say something, but he wasn't sure how to even react so he closed his mouth instead. Kibum turned away, walked to the center of the bedroom and disappeared. Geng slid down the door and pulled his knees to his chest. The red thread around his ring finger slowly disappeared from sight and Geng's heart broke a little more when it faded completely.
It was rare for upper level devils and gods to meet each other and not feel like banishing the other, but circumstances called for a peaceful meeting. They stood facing each other, less than thrilled with the fact that they were anywhere near each other.
"I'm sure you've seen the records of Kibum's past lives," the god said.
"Of course I have. When he started showing an interest in the angel I looked to confirm my suspicions," the devil replied.
"We are prepared to give him a second chance," the god said.
"What makes him different from any other devil?"
"He did not choose his role," the god said.
For the past six months Kibum had spent as much time away from Geng as he possibly could, which actually worked in favor of his mission, causing friction amongst fans of Super Junior and between the members of the group. He didn't like it, though, if only because the last thing he wanted was to avoid Geng.
Now, he looked around completely bewildered at his surroundings. Devils weren't usually allowed in the realm of the gods, but there was no mistaking the place. The place was as serene as humans thought it should be, but Kibum felt ill at ease, unsure what could possibly bring him to such a place when he certainly hadn't cast any transportation spells.
"Kibum?" Kibum turned around quickly, startled by Geng's voice. "What are you doing here?" Geng asked.
"I wish I knew," Kibum replied. "I was in the underworld with my cat demons and then suddenly I was here."
Geng walked over, wings not hidden for once, but that made sense given where they were. "It's not possible for devils to come here on their own so a god must have pulled you here."
"I did." Kibum and Geng both looked up at the god approaching them. "I am Geng's guardian god."
"I'd say it's a pleasure to meet you, but as I have no idea what you want with me I'm going to refrain for now," Kibum replied.
"Be nice," Geng chided. "You said you wished to see me," addressing the god in front of them. "Does it have something to do with Kibum?"
"Both of you come with me. You'll find out soon enough why you've both been summoned." The god turned and walked away, leaving Geng and Kibum to follow behind. It didn't take long to reach a group of gods and upper level devils. Kibum frowned slightly at how amicably they seemed to be sitting together.
"Did your spell go awry that you couldn't bring them directly here?" Kibum's superior asked.
"I thought it best to bring them to a calmer part of the realm," Geng's guardian replied easily.
"What's going on?" Kibum demanded, irritated and impatient. It didn't help that Geng stood close enough that their arms were brushing against one another the entire time they walked and now continued to touch as they stood waiting.
"Kibum, what do you know of your past lives?" the guarding god asked.
"Nothing. I'm not superior enough to be allowed access to that knowledge," Kibum replied.
"Then, perhaps, it would be better to hear the information from your superior."
Kibum turned to his superior, temper rising. "It's rather simple, Kibum. In all your previous incarnations you were an angel. During your last incarnation you fell from grace and were thus reborn as a devil this time around. That is why you have an angel for a match and not another devil. Your match never changes as you go through your reincarnations," his superior explained.
"You should give him the full story of his fall," one of the gods present said.
Kibum looked at all the faces, gods he didn't recognize and devils who were far above him. "The full story?"
"You were seduced by a devil who is being punished for her tricks. There are spells to allow devils to take on any form we like, you've mastered said spells, but as you know it is not permitted for devils to take the form of an angel. The devil who seduced you led you to believe that she was your match and encouraged your fall," his superior explained, irritation obvious. "It will be several lifetimes before she is done paying for her crime."
Kibum simply stood there, dumbfounded at what he was being told. He glanced at Geng who looked just as confused as he was.
"Because your fall was not of your choice and the result of such trickery we gods have decided to give you a second chance. We can have you reincarnated as an angel in your next life if you do not bring about Geng's fall from grace." Geng's guardian god spoke with calm that somehow helped ease some of Kibum's temper. "You will have to ignore your match for this lifetime, but when you are reborn you will be reborn as an angel and you will be able to honor your match."
"Ignore the match to what extent?" Kibum questioned. "He didn't fall when we dated so I assume if we continued to do so he wouldn't fall."
"In order for the rebirth that you wish to happen to occur you must completely cease interaction with Geng that is not absolutely necessary. You can no longer be intimate with each other in any way," the guardian explained.
Kibum looked over at Geng and made his decision. "I will do as you say," he said, eyes still on Geng.
Geng looked at him and offered a hesitant smile. "It'll be fine once you're an angel again," he said. "We'll be happy."
Despite Geng's words, Kibum could see the heartbreak he was feeling. "I'm sorry."
Kibum stirred as sleep slowly slipped from his grasp. He looked to his side, a smile on his face as he shifted and woke his lover with a soft kiss. Geng hummed as he wrapped his arms around Kibum's neck and pulled him closer. Their rebirth was timed so they would be the same age, meaning that even after Kibum's death he waited another century before being reborn at the same time as Geng.
"Morning," Geng greeted when their lips parted.
"Morning," Kibum whispered back. He lay back down and wrapped his body around Geng's, content with how things had turned out in the end.
