Complete and utter defeat...

Sep 23, 2005 00:43

For the past few week's I've been trying to fix up Lee's old TiVo. It was stuck on the "Powering Up" screen, and the hard drive made a terrible clicking noise. Tonight I've finally decided to concede defeat after spending hours and hours googling, reading hundreds of community postings, and trying a variety of different configurations. I have taken ( Read more... )

your lj has gone downhill. i only understand about half of what you say nowadays. don't feel bad about the tivo - i'm sure you'll get it working really soon. :)

dude, that's awesome!

i haven't tinkered on anything in years, and i've never tinkered to that extent, either! the last time i did something like that was setting up a really cheap linux box as a NAT (i think that's what it's called) before my senior year of college for my apartment.

heh, thanks. would be fun to h4x0r a bit more - there are all sorts of TiVo tweaks that look like fun (for example, setting up your TiVo so you can telnet into it or run it as an FTP server). maybe i can try again in a few months when the sight of the exposed TiVo motherboard no longer sickens me.

Ahh yes... tinkering... I spent much of undergrad doing just that.

It's funny, I just threw a null modem away yesterday. I didn't think I'd ever have a use for it again since I hadn't used it since 1997. Maybe I'll fish it out of the trash and put it back into my box-o-cables-and-adapters (which has been progressively shrinking since 2002).

yeah, it's so crazy - i can't believe that i actually needed an external modem - i emailed a bunch of the older guys in our group to find one.

I'm pretty sure I threw away my external modem when we moved out to Cali...

I'm sure that my poor wife is wondering why I've spent all of these hours mucking around with a silly old piece of hardware when I could be doing other things like taking our Nintendogs for a walk or cleaning our condo.

does this mean you lost your bid for a pet?

pets are still in the works. i've been trying hard to keep the place clean. we almost got two kittens from our cat-loving friends. :)
