It also shows the dualistic nature of "Lain", how she tries to struggle with her inner self that is imbedded within the technological nightmare of it all. On a stylistic level, the use of sound and filters on the animation gives it a dreamlike quality, which causes us to surrender ourselves to the story, real or unreal, and leaves it for us to interpret the symbolism. I actually own the DVD box set of "Lain", though I've only seen it once and should watch it through again to give a more thorogh review of it.
*chuckles* yeah, how come I can forget...the dualistic nature~! may be we can call it 'splitting of character', sorta. this thingy has existed in so many other Japanese anime and shows, one famous example, I think, is the Neon Genesis Evangelion, when that EVA 00 pilot(Lin) struggled with the cruel herself.
But why script writing people want to play with dualistic nature? it's even abused nowadays, heh ^^ is it because we are all living under a mask in the real cruel world?
