Birth By Sleep,
Ven, and
the Kingdom Hearts seriesCharacter Background: Ven had no memories of his past when he first set foot in the Land of Departure. The only thing he could remember was his name. He was brought there by Master Xehanort to be cared for by Master Eraqus and his pupils, Terra and Aqua. The Land of Departure quickly became his new home, and he became best friends with the other two students. Ven stayed there in relative happiness, until the Mark of Mastery exam day was upon them. The night before, Aqua made the three of them charms that would not only link their destinies together forever, but to remind them that they were still the best of friends.
On the day of the exam, Ven had hoped that both of his friends would make it as Masters, but it turned out that only Aqua met the qualifications. Terra left before either of them could say anything to help, and Ven retreated to his room. There, he met a boy in a mask that told him that if Terra left, then he would change forever. Angered and concerned, Ven rushed to find his friend, but he left before Ven could tell him anything. Determined, he left the Land of Departure to find Terra.
He traveled through the worlds of Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, but couldn't find Terra in either of them. As he left the Enchanted Dominion world, he spotted the masked boy from before as he traveled the paths between worlds. Ven followed him to an unknown world, and immediately got into a fight with him. He was defeated by the masked boy, and would have been killed if it hadn't been for the timely arrival of one Mickey Mouse. With Mickey's help, Ven was able to drive back the masked boy. After the battle, the two forged a bond of friendship. Mickey then told him how he traveled, which was by what looked like a shooting star. It randomly placed them on a random world, and at that moment it did just that.
He arrived at the world of Radiant Garden without Mickey, and noticed a huge Unversed (an incomplete creature formed from negativity) heading toward somewhere. Ven chased after it, and reunited with Aqua and Terra to take on the monstrosity. They defeated it effortlessly through teamwork, but the victory was short-lived as he got scolded for taking off like that. When Ven mentioned the boy in the mask, Terra seemed to recognize him, calling him "Vanitas." He warned Ven to never go near Vanitas, and then Aqua voiced her suspicions over Terra's control over the darkness in his heart. Terra left after the argument, and Ven went after him. He met up again with his friend, who told him something cryptic and it sounded like he was getting into something dangerous. After he left, Ven went to find Aqua to tell her about what had happened. She told him forcefully to return home when they met up again. He stayed in Radiant Garden to think about his choices, when he met Lea and Isa. Ven forged a friendship between the two, and made up his mind due to what Lea said about making friends with more people so that nobody would forget him.
Thus, Ven disobeyed Aqua's wishes and set off to explore other worlds. His goal that time was to make new friends, and see what he could see before returning to the Land of Departure. It was the first time since he had arrived at Master Eraqus' castle that he had been able to leave, after all. He traveled to several different worlds, and while exploring Never Land, he happened upon Mickey's shooting star. Unfortunately, it activated soon after he picked it up.
He then found himself at the Mysterious Tower, where Master Yen Sid, Donald Duck, and Goofy were. The three had been looking for Mickey, and Yen Sid could finally discern where he was since he wasn't using the shooting star. The old wizard gave them a glimpse as to where he was, and Ven recognized it immediately as the place he had fought Vanitas the first time. He promised to return the king to safety and left for that world.
Upon reaching Mickey, Ven was approached by Master Xehanort, which triggered a few memories from the past. Xehanort then revealed that his heart had been torn in two, one light and one dark. He also told him that the reason that was to be was to forge the ultimate Keyblade, a X-blade. It could only be forged through a clash between pure light and pure darkness, and that was why Master Eraqus had kept Ven on one world for so long, no matter how many times Ven had asked to go to other worlds.
Then, Xehanort used his magic to push Ven and Mickey into a dark portal. It sent Ven all the way back to the Land of Departure, and he landed there to confront Master Eraqus of what he had just learned. Upon learning that it was, indeed, true that he had been kept there out of fear, Master Eraqus then did something that shocked Ven. He took out his Keyblade and went into a battle stance, stating that he had no choice but to end Ven's life. It was at that strike that Terra intercepted it, protecting Ven. As Terra and Eraqus traded blows, the younger man created a dark portal and threw Ven into it.
He then landed on Destiny Islands. Ven tried to get back through the portal, but it closed before he could. Vanitas then appeared, but Ven refused to fight him. He then had a flashback to when he was at the deserted world he had visited twice already. Ven was surrounded by creatures called Heartless, beings of darkness that hungered for hearts, and Xehanort was watching from above a plateau. The man urged him to unleash the power within him and create the X-blade, else it would destroy him. Yet Ven refused to use it, and the next he knew he was on the ground, wounded from the battle. Xehanort then extracted the darkness within Ven's heart, and gave him the name Vanitas. He had also left the boy on Destiny Islands to die, as the separation had fractured his heart so much that he was starting to lose it completely. Luckily, Ven had been saved by a newborn heart willing to help him heal.
After the flashback, Vanitas then used a dirty tactic on the boy. He told Ven to go to the Keyblade Graveyard, the unknown world where everything had started, and threatened to kill Aqua and Terra. Left with little choice, he vowed that this would be the end, and set off for the Keyblade Graveyard to save his friends. It was here that he was taken to Wonderland, however there was more to his fate in the future.
When he met up with his friends, he asked for them to end his life so that he couldn't be used to create the X-blade. Before they could even say anything, Xehanort and Vanitas appeared. Terra rushed to face them, leaving Aqua and Ven behind to watch. Eventually, Ven ran to help Terra. He tried to land a hit on Xehanort, but he teleported behind the boy and froze him. The man threw Ven off the plateau and onto Aqua, who had been about to assist her friend. Then, a young man named Braig approached them, trying to goad Aqua into fighting against Terra. Slowly, Ven was getting over his frozen state, struggling all the more as Aqua rushed to attack Braig. She was then knocked out by Vanitas, and as he raised to finish her off, Ven broke free from his icy prison.
The two fought, and eventually Ven defeated Vanitas. However, in doing so, Ven had forced the two of them to merge. As Vanitas started to fade away, it became apparent that the Unverse originated from Vanitas himself as a few of them pinned Ven down. The two merged, but it was incomplete. Ven refused to make it complete, determined to destroy the X-blade and Vanitas, even if it meant destroying his own heart. Once again, Ven proved victorious in the final battle between them. However, it came at a high cost. Once again his heart was extremely damaged, and it fled his body. Eventually, he came upon the same heart that helped him heal the first time, and asked if the boy, Sora, could help him once again. Sora agreed, and their hearts merged.
Abilites/Special Powers: Ven is a Keyblade wielder, and can summon his weapon whenever he needs to use it. He has two types of attacks: magic and Keyblade-specific attacks. Magic and Keyblade attacks can be divided into three categories: basic, advanced, and ultimate. However, after he uses a Command, he will have to wait a few seconds for the Command to ‘recharge’ in order to use it again. In his Command Deck, he can use up to eight Commands, and can switch them out when not in combat.
He holds his Keyblade in a reverse grip, and his attacks are very quick. Ven doesn’t hit hard, but he does hit in quick succession, so the damage dealt can be brutal if you’re not careful.
Ven also has Style Changes, which only happen when certain conditions are met. For example, in order to use the Diamond Dust Style, he has to use Blizzard spells or Blizzard-like commands as the primary source of filling up the Style Gauge.
He can perform more accurate attacks in the form of Shotlocks. A Shotlock requires him to take the time to lock on and charge up his energy, which is a downside. The upside is that he can target it on multiple enemies or focus it on one. There is a variety of Shotlocks he can perform, however he can only switch them when he's not in battle.
Interestingly enough, in canon the Keyblade can unlock anything, including the hearts of others. However, Ven isn’t aware of the ability to unlock hearts, but he does know that he can unlock anything else, even things that don’t necessarily have a keyhole. This is seen with Terra unlocking a sliding door in Deep Space.
In his canon, he is able to borrow the strength of his friends through the use of Dimension Links, or D-Links for short. He has a D-Link with the following people: Terra, Aqua, Cinderella, Snow White, Experiment 626 (Stitch), Peter Pan, Mickey Mouse, Zack, Donald, and Goofy.
Ven also has the ability to sense the light and darkness within others. He doesn’t make much of a comment on whether a person is light or dark unless it’s blatantly obvious that someone has a strong darkness inside their heart.
Lastly, he can travel between worlds by using the machine on his left arm. It transforms into a suit of armor, and by using his Keyblade (which can transform into a hoverboard-like vehicle for Ven) he can use the ‘forbidden pathways’ called the Lanes Between. For the purposes of Entranceway, he will only be able to fly around on it.
Third-Person Sample:
Ven was confused as he found himself hovering over a huge mansion. He steered his hoverboard to circle the building, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary about it. Well, at least it didn't seem like there were any Unversed in the area. Ven landed near the entrance, the board and armor disappearing as he did. The blond scratched his head as he tried to piece together what might have gone wrong.
He remembered being confronted by Vanitas, and then heading off to the Keyblade Graveyard. Ven was pretty sure that he had followed the right path! It was possible that this world had been in the way or he somehow got off-course, but it seemed pretty unlikely that had happened. Man, this was confusing!
His confusion soon turned to a growing sense of urgency. He had to get to his friends before Vanitas did something awful to them. Ven couldn't live with himself if anything happened to him because he was too late by dawdling at some strange mansion. As curious as he was about it, he couldn't explore it. The blond took out his Keyblade, and pointed it to the sky, concentrating.
Nothing happened.
Seconds went by, and he was starting to panic a bit. Ven put his blade away, thinking. It wasn't a time for panic, not yet. Well…if he was in a mansion, then it wasn't too far-fetched to think there were people around, right? After all, it looked like it was pretty well-kept!
"Guess there's only one way to find out," he mused before entering the mansion.
First-Person Sample:
[Ven's not entirely sure he's doing this right. He gives the camera a perplexed look.]
Does this thing even work? Oh!
[He accidentally presses a button. The screen is dark, but the audio is coming in just fine.]
Oops! Um, how do I turn that back? …Please say I didn't break it.
[And then he's back with a triumphant smile!]
There! I think that did it.
So…I guess, people can hear me, now? [The blond gives the audience a somewhat awkward hand wave.] Er, hi! I've got a question to ask.
Has anybody seen my friends pass by or if they're even here? One's a girl with blue hair and eyes, and the other's a boy with brown hair and dark blue eyes. They're both pretty tall, I guess. The girl's name is Aqua and the boy's is Terra. I'd really appreciate it!
[Ven thinks for a moment.]
Oh, yeah, can anybody tell me about this mansion place? 'Cause I don't think I've ever been here before.
