So I read the USA Today article that profiled gay rights views in Kansas. Horribly written. Instead of painting a representative picture of those who support, oppose and don't judge gay rights in the state of Kansas, it showed us a sort of Picasso, off-kilter group, overwhelmed by right-wing religious people. Now, that may portray the demographic ( Read more... )

The whole issue of religion is irrelevant anyway, because we live in a country that was founded on, among other things, the principle of the separation of church and state.

(And that statistic about half of all marriages ending in divorce is skewed, by the way. It's based on the fact that, say, one million people get married each year and 500,000 get divorced -- but those divorces are from the ENTIRE pool of marriages over ALL the previous years. So you could say that there are 50% as many divorces in a single year than there are marriages, which would be correct.)

Thank you for commenting. You are wise in these things. And thanks for the stats fix -- I have to write a paper on the evils of statistics this evening. Now I have examples!!!!!!

P.S> Happy early birthday :-)

Erin, I think the Bible is a horrible tool to use for arguing purposes since it contains so many hypocritcal passages. People use the Bible to find support for and against gays, but how can that be? The bible has passages against it and calling on people to accept others despite their differences. Such an ancient document that contains so many self contradicting passages shouldn't be used for arguing purposes ( ... )

Did you hear...Bush is openly supporting a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT that will ban gay marriage. I'm not sure if I understand this correctly, but maybe some policial science type that may be out there might...isn't the Consitution supposed to outline the rules for government? It sounds as though a gay marriage ban falls under the category of a law, not an amendment. Like, the first amendment describes that the government must reserve your right to say whatever you want. I guess it would have to be along the lines of giving the government power to decide who should be allowed to be married. It sounds kinda specific to me. But anyways... I thought this country was supposed to be evolving. Something tells me that 20 years from now, when all of this mess "supposedly" will be behind us, we will look back on this in the same way we look back upon the 1960s and the political leaders in the south who opposed the civil rights movements.
