Oh my god. I am so happy to have found this post! I've been chewing on Lady Gaga, excuse me, Stefani Germanotta (intellectually that is, anything else would be just eww-- sorry, like the article says, I don't find her sexy either, but I believe that's a good thing now!), particularly this video for "Alejandro ( Read more... )

Gaga, I think, is a professional irl troll. Part of me kind of expects her to quit the biz one day, announcing that this has all been great field research for her master's thesis in sociology, only to discover that she's published her findings on pop culture via her autobiography.

Well, the thing is that if you listen to her unplugged shows or actually speak to her in serious interviews, she is a completely different person. I really do think that Lady Gaga having no real substance is entirely intentional. It's absurdist performance art at its finest, and while I can take or leave her songs themselves (as mentioned below, it's the same inane bubblepop that we've all heard for 20 years now), I have to kind of love her a little for her showmanship. If absolutely nothing else, she knows how to market herself very, very well.

Aah! I was wondering what you thought of that video. I was going to email you as soon as I saw it, but I got distracted somehow.
I was extremely skeeved out by the part where she's with all of the scantily clad men and they are pulling her around. It seemed a little too much like simulated gang rape. She's being overpowered and shoved around like a doll.
There's another scene where it looks like one of the men is choking her or bending her in half. The female object of desire has always been disposable in music videos, but now it's not enough to show close ups of her body without showing her face. She has to be symbolically destroyed.
I don't know. Maybe I'm analyzing this too much.
All I know is that the ultimate goal of her schtick is to generate as much revenue as possible.
I remember when I first saw her, I couldn't believe that she was dressed in such bizarre things but her music was the same bland Spice Girls type shit they've been churning out for the past 20 years, with very few minor tweaks!

Yeah, the pulling and dominance was very creepy. I just sat and stared and tried to make sense of all of it. But I couldn't. It really was affixed in my mind, as crazy as that sounds ( ... )
