I've been making the point about where Xianity was 632 years ago for a long time, and so I (naturally) think there's some merit to the comparison. But like meph, I think the distinction between ethics and rules is a pretty vague one. The memeplex that is Islam is evolving in all sorts of different ways in different places, and the disjunction is lesser or greater depending on circumstances.
I'd argue that the coincidences have more to do with geographical spread, the development of factions and the resulting tensions between accomodationist moderates, conservative radicals (wow, that's pretty oxymoronic) and "host societies" than with the maturation of some underlying ethical scheme.
