I've read beloved, I have to say I wasn't blown away. It had probably been over-hyped and I don't think it helped that I was 'forced' to read it for school.

What is Song of Solomon about?

Alan Moore: A Disease Of Language. Or Voice of The Fire. Either of those completely stun me, every time.

Yeah, Voice of the Fire is ace. Although I know a lot of people who are rather put off by the first chapter, which is narrated by a mildly retarded caveman in 4000BC, and has a vocabulary of about 200 words. Stick with it.

I read "Under the Skin" by Michel Faber recently which I loved. Very pared down language, but masterfully used. I always felt he knew exactly what he was doing.
