Much confess the trains leave me cold, except for the flashing metal danger they present - but the forbidden dark aspect of the tunnels themselves fascinates me. Puts me in touch with my inner Gollum.

That's the thing isn't? Exactly. The tunnels are interstitial, there's something inherently mysterious about vanishing into the blackness and then arriving at your destination as though teleported there.
