Alvar gave a hearty laugh when the smaller man yelled at him. It wasn't the first time someone had said that. The last time someone had tried to chase people out of the mines it had been a group of nine year olds who'd decided it was their clubhouse.

"Actually, lad..." He began, pointing to himself with his thumb. "It's mine."

The young man touched the bridge of his nose. It was always the same. If it wasn't some hot-blooded young man wanting to prove he was a hero, it was some old-timer wanting to show he still had life. But they were the past and Sol were the future.

"Just get outta here before we bust you up," he said.

Alvar was still amused, but he recognised a threat when he heard one and stopped laughing. They were adults and should deal with the results of thier own decisions. If they wanted to be taken seriously then he was happy to get serious.

"Hmph. Golem. Terra." He said, releasing Golem and his Rhydon. Golem saw the mines, wanted to be in the mines and so went about getting into the mines in the quickest way it knew, rolling at the barracade at high speed. The Rhydon grunted but did nothing, waiting for an order.

Golem flattened the gates and the grunt panicked. He knew that Sneasel and Raticate couldn't stop it and yelled for his partner, who'd been sitting on some barrels checking her nails, to do something - except she'd heard the noise and was already doing that.

There was a red flash and Golem had been caught by a Drapion. It had braced itself and its back legs were half-buried in the ground.

"Goddamn it. I've got to inform the boss!"

He ran off after that.

Garth had come here to take pokemon back from Alvar. When he heard there was something happening in the mines he deliberately avoided that area, only to find out that the man he was looking for had gone there.

Of course, when he found out that the people who had kicked the workers out of the mines were sol grunts it was his responsibility as a gym leader to deal with it. The old man had cleared the barracade so he dashed in, letting him take the grunts at the entrance.

Hoppip whimpered. She didn't like being in the mines. They were dark and cold and away from the sunlight she loved so much. Garth covered her with his arms and she rubbed against his hands quietly.

"Who's down here?" He demanded, sounding a lot more confident than he was.

"Hurry up. With these specimens in our possession, we should be able to return them to life."

Aki, unlike Garth, loved the dark. It was an environment he was used to and one in which he felt safe. He couldn't be seen and mocked, and he was free to work. The team had come down into the mines to purloin the fossils found within, as well as all useful minerals. They would be useful for his work and get the boss off his back and allow him to continue what he did best - science.

"HEY, COMMANDER! COMMANDER EURUS!"

The grunt from topside came running down the tunnel, heading towards Aki from a direction opposite Garth. The latter frowned and turned to the man, who was making too much noise. He pushed up his glasses angrily, and if Garth was listening he would hear a familiar voice.

"What is it?"

"A guy's broken into the mine!"

Aki took a moment to process the information. His eyes narrowed. "One man? How could he get past the guards? Pathetic. Get back up there, take three men with you, and remove him." He turned back to the wall, in ( ... )

"Worry seed." Garth whispered, wincing as Hoppip pushed seeds under his skin. It stung. He didn't recognise the voice, right now a lot of the things that had happened in the weeks before the fire weren't important enough to be worth the effort of remembering them. He released Parasect. The insect liked it here a lot more than hoppip did, scurrying around excitedly in the cool place before stopping completely and looking at its trainer with empty eyes.

"He's coming past now. Spore." Garth said, letting the grunt walk into a cloud of sleep-inducing spores.

He continued on in the direction he'd heard the voice coming from, still clutching Hoppip to his chest. Parasect followed him quietly.

Chink. Chink.

The nearer Garth came, the louder was the sound of the pickaxes. Aki watched as the grunts mined for fossils, and clutched his arms and scowled. They'd only found one so far!

"Work faster!" he said loudly.

He held up his piece of old amber under the lamplight. He could see the lifeform trapped inside. It wasn't Sol's possession - it was his.
