My favorite charity is donorschoose.org . It's a US education charity. Teachers write proposals for, say, books or A/V equipment or science kits, and you can look through the proposals (for example, just the ones in your home county) and pick one to fund. The organization then buys the stuff and gives it to the classroom. Then the teacher takes pictures for you of the kids using the supplies, and the kids all write you thank you notes. I have a really sweet picture of a bunch of 1st graders all gathered around a giant globe that's bigger than 3 of them put together....
