photo meme 10- colorful corner

I was walking around outside after THE rainy day and realized my amaryllis bulbs had opened, so I shot a picture. This is the first chance I've had to post it.

The first bulbs I ever started here were a Mother's Day gift from Jedi's preschool days. They've hung on, multiplying and giving me pleasure ever since.

They do have other colors, but I love the bright red, too.

Ooo! I've never known what amaryllis looked like before! As a city girl I was pretty lazy about some things, and every time I read a book with a lot of flower/plant words in them (The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables series), I'd just think "mysterious plant!" and skip over it. Of course, I think that if I were a girl now I would look up the images online ;) . But anyway, you've solved the amaryllis mystery for me :) .

I've only ever considered them houseplants! Midwesterners buy them in the winter for blooms indoors during the days of gray.

Down here they stay outside in the ground all year around-we don't even take them up like some places have to do. Then, sometime in April they just shoot up and bloom. Honestly they're one of the easiest plants to deal with in the world.

Gorgeous - we only ever think of amaryllis as an exotic indoor plant.

Isn't is funny, the differences in climates? Here we think of them as a sort of lazy person's weedy flowering plant-they grow whether you deal with them or not and they bloom just as easily.

I haven't done a thing with them all year-just left them entirely alone.

Goodness! They are looking very fine. I don't think I have seen non-house-plant Amaryllis before. Very nice!
