Are there that many foolish people in New York?

That was rhetorical, yeah? :)

Staying on the left? Is this Britain? Or did I miss something? I rode my bicycle in NYC a grand total of one time and that was several years ago. (well, except for when I lived in Bayside - we'd go riding in Crocheron Park and I don't really consider Bayside, Queens to be NYC, you know? *g*) Once was enough to make me realize I'm just not that suicidal. Drivers and Pedestrians are in perpetual conflict with each other, but both of them gang up on bicycle riders with a fury.

I ride on the streets so I can escape the city. =)

At the time of my rant, my foolish people question was completely serious. But now looking back on it, I have to laugh. My odds of running into an idiot are good, considering there's 8 million people here!

As for staying on the left - I'm completely at a loss. Perhaps I missed the episode in American history where the British won the Revolutionary War. Or perhaps the guy was a confused transplant who just happened to have picked up a strong New York accent...

I rode in Crocheron Park once, earlier this summer. It's one of the most beautiful parks in the city, IMO. You're right, that area of Queens is not NYC at all! Douglaston and Bayside are more like suburbia: green, gorgeous, and very, very expensive.

New York is just like Oslo, it seems. The very same things are happening here. People are just as foolish, especially those with children (the children have the right to play wherever they like!).

It's baffling. These are the times when I think there should be a parental fitness test!

Agreed! People need a license to drive, and raising a child is a much larger responsibility!
