Harvest Feast

Have been rather exhausted in aftermath of a small dinner party I hosted on Monday. It was a good deal of fun, no small thanks to the copious quanities of good wine poured all around. (Enough that I managed to smash my first wine glass in 4 years. Ah, well. No one was injured, at least, but now I'll have to track down what kind of glass it was so I ( Read more... )

Mmmm. That soup sounds great. I love squash soup, and the only experience I have of including fruit in a soup (parsnip and rhubarb) turned out very well too - gave it a subtly different taste which was hard to pin down but added so much interest.

Care to share the recipe for the sage ice-cream? That sounds fascinating. Though I know you'll have made it in your marvellous old ice & salt maker and I still haven't got an ice-cream maker machine of any kind.

Parsnip and rhubarb - I'd never think to put those two together! Actually, have never made soup with either, but I do like both, so perhaps I'll give it a try. Do you cook the vegetables in broth?

Will post the sage ice cream shortly. It goes phenomenally well with the cake, so I'll post that, too.

For the ice cream, I wonder if you could just stick it into the freezer and give it a stir every half hour or so. It'll probably end up being a bit denser and icier than one made with a machine, but it might work.

That sounds delish! I love squash soup, it's so "fall" to me. I've had it with apples instead of pears and a bit of cream and it's great that way too!

I usually make it with apples, and when I'm feeling particularly decadent I'll add cream, too. But that day I had a pear on hand that simply refused to ripen, so I figured I'd give that a try! (A salad was standing by, in case the experiment failed miserably.)
